Right

My boy has the sun in his eyes
He is a dream that stops here
From time to time

A poem which hobbles
In the darkest night
Shaved skin and vowels
Disguised and wanting

Canny little worm
Digging
Deeper
Deeper
Down

Can you imagine when
Everything fosters a sign
Thirty three
Four for a pound
The real deal

Atrium buggy
Stop me
Stop me

I wonder sometimes
What is the secret
Me
Her
Him

If I am the secret
I am rotting inside

Uneasy blackbird
Chirping in a pie
Four and twenty
See

Unable
To speak
To be

Sometimes nobody hears
That is when the dread sings loudest
The same words trapped in amber
Screaming

My boy has the moon in his eyes
He is a dream that stops here
From time to time

I hold his hand
Like a mother would
See the pink skies I say
As he fades and falls
Yes
He smiles and sings and soars

Our dreams stick together
Sweet as candy canes
Sure as stars

Unstoppable
Unswartable

Really quite magical she says

I forgive her the made up word
They made us up after all

Look she squeals and claps
The moon is like peach melba
Pink and yellow and shiny
Like Betadine she delights

I smooth her head
And quietly say farewell
I know he will come back

When the time is right.

Tin

The penny bites in my pocket
I wipe off the edges
With a used paper towel
Such a funny rabbit hole
Whispers Alice
Pink windows
Cardboard pots
Stones in the atrium
Just like a zoo
I suppose we are not quite human

I especially like the bottles
The fizz and clank
Shh don't tell them that
That was a secret
Shared with the other tin girl
It drank away the menace
Stiff shirts and empty time
It was nice though

It is always nice chasing rabbit

I suppose in a way it stops us unravel
She ponders
Reaching for my pocket

I keep our whole world buttoned in there

I think the secret to lying is telling the truth
Lay it out on paper
Like we lay out our words
And our body on the sheets
Exactly so

We sit
We sit
Waiting at the pink window
Underneath the binary clock
Tick tock
Tick tock
Not looking up

I really do love words she says

Bucket proof vest
Bullet proof list
Billet proof head

The place where we are free and rampant

It's not so bad really
The powder and dust
The blank afternoons

Words
Walls
Windows

Sunshine falling on us
Safety net
Survival boat
Place of rest

We are the words
And in the words
That is happy says Alice
Happy as finding the people who can read us

All the tin people with hearts of flesh and gold

Lucky penny she delights
It sits cleanly in my pocket
Waiting
Waiting.

Puzzle

Hmm says Alice
Chewing her sugar star
It is curious
A real puzzle

Like planting wishes in dung
And expecting them to sprout

Feckless
Superior
Foreign

I reach for the flowers
The stain grows and flows
Thick as rust in our veins

Are we luminous or hollow
Lucid or dumb
Chiseled or soft
Just like corn pie she squeals

I suppose we are both
Like the moon
One side light
The other dark as treacle
Left in a tin on the shelf

I like treacle
Especially when the lid gets sticky
And we prise it open like a paint can
A colour present she claps

We sink like wine
In winter sunrise
Coming
Going
Out of reach

I farm our dreams
Like a mole
We are an elastic deformation
A blue seed stretching on the vine
Not sure of our mistake

We cannot see the sky
Tucked behind these pink walls
We would like to fall
Fresh as hopeful concrete
Into the red bed
Straight back home.

Bell

The concrete smells nice
Rain in car tops
And cracked bitumen

The gentle purr of your breath on my cheek

I forgot the song I was waiting for
Friends use the window
Strangers use the door

Why does time move slower when we're speeding
She asks
I forget that we are early
Not late

I remember the bruises
Sternum
Wrist
Groin

500ml of glue stat
She inhales
I kneel beside her on the floor
It looks like you are praying
I wonder what for

Our body aches
Drowsy and dull
Nasty
Like the flies

I feel a million miles away
Like pins and needles Alice whispers

Our finite territory is beautiful
I think
Silence stained in our skin
Ours to have
To hold
To be
We value it more than sugar or stars

It is us
In us
Of us
Nameless
Ours

It was what we were never allowed
Our quietness
Our voice
Our presence
Body
Soul
Mind
Bed
House
Home
Red
Sharp
Edge
Floor
Safe
Dark
Air
Window
Open
Clean
Tidy
Mine
Mine
Me

Stolen freedoms
That wore me away
Made me silent in a dead way

We listen to the rain come down

Are we alone even though someone is sleeping in our bed
We are always alone Alice
We have each other she replies

The concrete smells nice
Rain in car tops
And cracked bitumen

We rest back
Wishing

It is nice to hear our ears ring again
Rain and church bells wrapped in foil.

Broken

I wish there was a way
To escape this empty feast
We miss our sink
Blood and crushed vanilla

I am not myself

Moulded
Missed
More

I use my hands to find my heart
Is it still there whispers Alice
Maybe
But it feels different

Worn out
Broken
Torn

The engine struggles
Petrol run through rusted veins

Fruitless
Folly
Failed

We sit still
On the mortuary shelf
Ghosts
Aching for midnight
Sweet bursting
Meth in our mouth
Stars and sinks and self

I miss that
Our self

We are strays
Too many parts
Bagged
Sacked
Hidden under the bed
Held tight in our head
It hurts

Like a mariachi band
Drilling through our teeth
She giggles

I miss that
Her laugh

Worn out
Broken
Torn

My skull aches for the generator
Glue
Dust
Vanilla crushed
The magical mutation of being

I miss that
Our being

I hold her hand
Turn over like a motor

I wish there was a way
To escape this empty feast.

Scry

The butterfly fell asleep in the window
Tired of our bickering
We are all frayed edges

Blue
Dress
Wings
Heart

Asleep on the bathroom floor
Did you hear its breath
Soft and sweet and sticky
All spun out on a spiders web

Tired
Exhaust
Suspension

We are up the creek she giggles
A chill that sticks
Plaster and glue
Are we separate or awake

Forgive us our sins

How does it go
I used to know
Mummy taught me my prayers

My mouth is dry
I scour back
Rattle scatter
Tug at the thread of her broken dress

Give us this day our daily bread
Forgive us our trespasses
Forgive them that trespass against us
Lead us not into temptation

Hmm she thinks
Chewing her sugar

I turn my head away
Pointless
She always knows when I am crying
When I am empty as a drum
Receding
Falling
Dropping the cord
At the bottom of the hole
Too far gone to send a signal

Tired
Exhaust
Suspension

If you could have a crystal ball in which to scry
What would your wishes be

I wish to sleep in the bed
I would like it to be soft
And safe

I would like you to be happy and free

I would like to cradle that butterfly
Hold her in my hand
As if she is my last day too

I would like to forgive forget and be

Hmm
The sun warms our face as we look to the sky
Well that doesn’t sound impossible to me.

Lethargy

We lie in the bed
Wide eyed
Wide awake
Shut in
Shut up

Tell me the name of the places you love

She chews her fingers
Thinks for a little while

Well I quite like it here
Why
Well there’s lots of sugar for a start
And you don’t make me do sums
It’s really quite curious

I lie in the bed
Awake
Asleep
Shut in
Shut out

Addicted
Defiant
Filth

That’s what she thought as she taped me up
That’s what everybody thinks
Except you
But you’re not real
You’re just stuck in the secret with me

I will crawl past the wolf
Eventually

The door is wide open
Firmly shut

There is no lock that can not be picked
She states proudly

Today we have a goal
Blue
Glue
Goo

Goody she trips and squeaks
I love a little solvency

Our gums drop
We will rest a while on Lethargy Road

The best place is the space between time and place and being
I say

Nowhere
Everywhere
Stars
Earth
Moon
Clouds

That’s just silly
Silly

That's funny I think as I touch my face
They said I couldn't cry

Tell me the name of the places you love she asks

You
Sleep
Safe
In
Your heart
Your arms
Your thoughts

Anywhere but here
Everywhere inside of us

She smiles and giggles
Her hand in mine
As I wait out another night

Plant

The orange pop explodes
Like my head
Emerging from the shallows
Teeth spilling
Revealing
Our good fortune
Collapsing on the floor

We tried to wave down the can van
We are always late
For important dates
She chuckles
Spinning around the moon

Pink is pretty
Good enough to eat
Yum
Yum

Can I make a call on the bubble gum phone
She asks
Lagging behind in the chalkline of our nonsense

The thunder crawls through my head
Reeling in
The seed of my being

Shiver
Swivel
Sway

Crushed vanilla and ropes wrapped around her head

The topmost cloud holds the clearest view
We sit there
Joyfully swinging our legs
Eating honey and pudding pots
Stirred around with a silver spoon
I could rather take this extravagance in my stride
She giggles

Shiver
Swivel
Sway

A feather falls in the window
At half past two
I will mow the floors
Pull the rotten bones
From the carpet fibre

I track the
Marks
Masks
Flowing through a shared vein of thought
And anger

I look to the sky

Longing
Wishing
Aching

A river
Radiant
Blue and heaven

I think of you
The seed of my beginning.
