Treats

We seek solace in the baking
Sweet cakes and forgiveness
We trace a line over our bellies
Pause and reflect
It has been years since she arrived
I dare not think of her parting
The weight of her body envelops mine
We are beginning over and over again
Sweet unfolding years
I should thank her for all that she has done
But the need to cry is unfolding
We eat sweet treats and remember.

  1. Wonderfully poignant, Jae, 'Sweet cakes and forgiveness'.
We chose the same list and came up with such different poems - that's the beauty of it!

  3. Sweet treats for a journey down memory lane. A beautiful poem. I just wonder...is your character a child or an older parent?

  6. Jae, this sits just right with me. In my mind. In my stomach. On the page. Thanks for not stuffing me with sugary sweets...we need the bitter to make it sweet:)

  9. This is the sweetest thing ever. I am completely melting. Isn't that first line so true?

"We trace a line over our bellies" ... This really gets me. I'm so worried the baby won't be okay, but I so hope I'm wrong and that you keep her forever.

    Sweet cakes and forgiveness

One can't really be sure if chefs do seek forgiveness. They cause others to be bloating after stuffing them with sweets and cakes!

  12. I too found this to be a very touching poem. Human relationships are so complex, and you remind us of the sweetness, and the ache.

  15. A lovely poem Jae. We seek solace in the baking
Sweet cakes and forgiveness...so often times, I too seek solace in cooking. This poem touches me deeply. It reminds me of the sweetness of life and love and yet, the work that goes into it, the waiting. It seems we both write about letting go. I chose the same list as you but such a different poem!

  16. Sweet treats so connects me to my mother. She lived a harsh life and it left her sharp edged. It was those wonderful sweet things she baked that somehow released her anger for a bit and my sisters and I could breathe a little peace. For me this could be written child or mother or both joined together and reflecting on sweet memories. Beautiful piece
