We watch the water drain from the sink
Hands shaking
Heart leaping
A thudding staccato
A sin once denied
We curl up in flames
Feel the crackle and sizzle on our skin
The smallest words shout like a stone in the night
We turn the doorknob
Spy inside
We are thinner
Our movement slick
We binge on sidekicks
Blow a whistle and she is gone
How I will miss her
Like the smallest thing removed from my life
I watch the water drain from the sink
Hands shaking
Heart leaping.
"Hands shaking. Heart leaping." I am wondering who has gone...I hope not Alice? "The smallest words shout like a stone in the night." What an amazing line that is. Your poems are golden, Jae. I am hoping that 2018 will be a good year for you, my friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sherry and a happy new year to you too
DeleteI luv the passion with which you wrote this piece. Even though i would prefer not, that descent into hell
ReplyDeleteBest Wishes for A Bright Creative 2018

Thank you Gillena and happy new year in return
DeleteThe We becoming I - has she gone with the bath water or just taking a break. The heart leaping could mean either way - a good poem and so well ended
ReplyDeleteThank you telltale
DeleteI noticed the 'we' at the beginning and the 'I' at the end as well. So many rich details. The water draining from the sink is evocative. May it carry away only what is unnecessary. The last two lines are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary
DeleteHappy 2018!Keep the river of creativity flowing!1
ReplyDeleteThanks Vandana
DeleteI also noticed that the poem begins with 'We' and ends with 'I'. Someone is gone. The 'hands shaking' and 'heart' offer clues. These lines are effective in conveying emotion:
ReplyDelete'A thudding staccato
A sin once denied
We curl up in flames
Feel the crackle and sizzle on our skin'.
Thank you for your insights Kim
DeleteThe we and I contrast is stunning... I shiver for what the consequence might be...
ReplyDeleteThank you Bjorn
DeleteLove the power of (small) words, the way they can have huge consequences.
ReplyDeleteThank you Magaly
DeleteSometimes separation does feel like death, there is no difference in our feelings, but of course the mind steps in and reassures us, it is only a separation. She will return. I remember reading book, "Time in It's Flight." And the author investigates these feelings. All will be well. And this year will bring great joy!!! xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteThank you Annell - and may this year bring many a good thing to you too
DeleteSometimes the loss of the smallest things leave the biggest holes. Very passionate.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rommy
DeleteWhen I started reading I felt a release as the water drained but was overcome by sadness at the end....all I can offer is hugs my friend and hope you will have peace and more hugs this New Year.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind wishes Donna and a happy new year to you too
DeleteI lose more and more people and creatures each year. Such is life, I know, but it leaves me with an emptiness that nothing can fill. Sometimes when I get up to go to the bathroom, I look in the mirror and see something which looks so sad and hopeless. This is not who young me believed we'd turn out to be.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this feeling Cara
DeleteLetting go can sum up the entire lesson of life. It is difficult. What we hold on to, treasure is never everlasting. Somehow, we do become stronger, more real though and beginnings always await us.
ReplyDeleteHave a Happy New Year Jae.
Thank you Myrna and a happy new year to,you too
DeleteWishing you a happy New Year! I felt a sadness as if losing a part of ones self.
ReplyDeleteExactly that thank you Truedessa and a happy new year to you too
DeleteWe are haunted by our losses. In some ways, I think, we are defined by them.
ReplyDeleteThank you Wendy
DeleteI see what others have seen here, too – yet I note, and thrill to the fact that even though the hands are shaking, the heart is leaping. Fear and excitement are demonstrably the identical physical and emotional sensations! It is wonderful when we reinterpret them this way. One step at a time into the scary, thrilling unknown, back straight ... and may the steps grow stronger and surer.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful comment - thank you Rosemary
DeleteAh, it's hard to lose even small things, we need to learn how to live without or replace them with new invented... Hopefully, Jae, you meet more real friends in the fresh year. Happy New Year, dear one!
ReplyDeleteThank you humbird and best wishes back
