We disappear in the folding of sheets
They whisper sweet melodies
Death and dying muttering under their breath
We are here to rediscover something
Drag ink over paper
Pin over skin
It comforts us
Like the whir of helicopter wings
We hear voices
They comfort us with their magic
It would be a miracle if they appear
Instead we have to sit and wait
Sit and wait
Listen for clues
Pick up crumbs
Line up sticks
It's all a game
But we no longer want to play.
I love the way this series of poems is developing, Jae. This poem has a strong theme with the folding, the 'ink over paper' and 'pin over skin'. There is also an echo of Hansel and Gretel in:
ReplyDelete'Pick up crumbs
Line up sticks
It's all a game
But we no longer want to play'.
As usual stark and yet comforting imagery. Don't play maybe? Is it an option?
ReplyDeleteOhh, this makes me just want to pick you up and cuddle you (both) and t el you it's all going to be all right. If only I could make it so! (It was the last line that did it to me.)
ReplyDeleteThe tedium and anxiety of waiting for those crumbs is well depicted. The small comforts offered don't make the waiting any easier.
ReplyDeleteDelicious dark and brooding!💞
ReplyDeleteEvery person who has ever said "This story/poem/essay... wrote itself" needs to read this. Because it is pure truth--art doesn't happen like magic. It might feel that way at time. But in reality, artists most always bleed for what the birth.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful!
Is would be helpful if you linked your poetry challenges to the specific post, not your whole blog. and also link the challenge that you are participating in would be nice. If you don't know how, flip over to my blog and leave me a message. I will happily help you.
ReplyDeleteThe clues, the crumbs, the waiting. The percolating of a poem takes many shapes...
in reality the game always draws a little blood..
ReplyDeleteYes, some days, we really don't want to play. But its not over until it is over...therefore we will continue to play, even when our heart isn't in the game.
ReplyDeleteYes, I got Hansel and Gretal, in the gathering of crumbs, after all we will need them to find the way home.
Your opening lines are so arresting, Jae. Wonderful. I can hear the not wanting to play. Maybe time to create your own. Sending you a handful of tulips, and some birdsong.
ReplyDelete'ink over paper' 'pin over skin' gives this a nursery rhyme quality that goes awry.
ReplyDeleteLove those phrases.
The waiting, the drawing of blood and the pain. I wish I could let you know it will be alright. Let both of you know.
