The horse and fox drink at the waters edge
Necks bristling
Noses smelling deep into the earth
Probing, rooting out salt and ashes
They are not owned
They have no fear
They are free to run and jump
Walk and trot
They move as one
Like a pair of hands
Silently conducting
Two creatures under the light of the sun
Far away
Close in mind
Sending out signals
Replying in kind
They release breaths in the wind
Heavy sighs
And thankful whinnies
When they are refreshed they move on
Leaves under foot
Trails in the mud
Signs that will be washed away when the rains come
We are glad to spend a moment with them
Watching quietly
Still as stone
We like these quiet days
When life is hyper real
And dreams are bright as apples
We ask for nothing more than water too
It flows through us
Travels through veins and vessels
Makes us steady and sure
Perhaps the green man still watches us
Perhaps he is gone
We remember that time
Clear as day
It lies under our skin
Inside us
Rides on the back of horse and fox
Gets washed away in passing days
We would not trade those struggles for a dime
Without them we would be a little less
Inside us they are crimes which chime
We let the memories wash over us like water
Cool and thankful
It paints a colourful design.
Oh! From the horse and fox drinking at the water's edge, to the green man, to the dreams bright as apples, this is possibly my favourite of your poems so far. I absolutely love it! Just. So. Beautiful.
ReplyDelete"We like these quiet days
ReplyDeleteWhen life is hyper real
And dreams are bright as apples"
Oh, that is a delightful phrase...I love the mood you created in this poem.
I love how you depicted struggles being an integral part of adding to a person. Wonderful imagery!
ReplyDelete...dreams are bright as apples" I love this! The fox and horse, the green man...this is just so very good. You really did the myth part so very well.
ReplyDeleteThe last three lines are delicious. They paint a picture one can feel coating the mind's flesh.
ReplyDeleteIf only more of us would be thankful for our past problems despite their difficulties, as experiencing and learning from them makes us better equipped for the future. Quiet days are good when we remember the turbulent past which many of us have. Beautifuly written Jae.
ReplyDeleteI love this image of the horse and fox drinking at the water’s edge:
ReplyDelete‘Two creatures under the light of the sun
Far away
Close in mind
Sending out signals
Replying in kind
They release breaths in the wind’
United in their needs and in nature.
I like the way you captured the ephemeral quality of life in:
‘Leaves under foot
Trails in the mud
Signs that will be washed away when the rains come’
and
‘We like these quiet days
When life is hyper real
And dreams are bright as apples’.
I love the picture you paint of the unusual, but affectionate, companionship of horse and fox. Fortunate the human that has such a friendship!
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful. I love that the memories wash over you like water and paint a colorful design! May all of your dreams be bright and colorful, Jae!!
ReplyDeleteThis is so wonderful, a bit like a fairytale or Aesop's fable. But in the end friendship is what matters.
ReplyDeleteI love this so much. And out of all those beautifully imaged lines, my favourite is the simple "They are not owned." To be free to choose our experiences or free to choose what we do with the experiences that befall or are thrust upon us..."cool and thankful" indeed.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful! Fresh as water over the toes on a bright day.
ReplyDeleteWow! This is all wonderful, and indeed very fresh and refreshing. I was especially struck by
ReplyDeleteThey move as one
Like a pair of hands
Silently conducting
And any mention of the Green Man will always thrill me.
I think friendship comes in many forms and each has meaning.
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite part. The redder the apple the better.
We like these quiet days
When life is hyper real
And dreams are bright as apples
Wonderful … wonderful - definitely linger-worthy - notes in this beautifully drawn piece.
ReplyDeleteOh the images! a pair of hands
ReplyDeleteSilently conducting
Two creatures under the light of the sun
and the dreams as bright as apples! Wow!
