Like dynamite wet and useless
Lying at the bottom of a river
We dare not speak out loud
We dare not let them hear our breaths
We must be quiet
Otherwise we will spill out all our secrets
It is dark inside
The fire dwindles
The sky caves in
But still we have each other
In the morning we will tell stories
They will blow our mind
Stronger than potions or cake
I wonder if anyone knows we are here
We hide like rabbits deep in our burrow
Feet quick and dancing
Fingers nimble as we close windows
And open doors
We do not explode through fear
We are not enraged or frightened
More like a balloon fit to burst
Well past the party and the cheers
So many thoughts
Twirling and turning
Enough to leave us giddy
Maybe an explosion is over due
It would be good to empty out some thoughts
Make room for others
But how do you light the dynamite after all these years of silence
Easy says Alice
You just let go
Her words echo like birdsong in the night
For a fleeting moment I feel I can
And when I do
The sky will sparkle like a million golden planets
Falling head first into the sun.

'my heartbeat quickens at the thought
of birthing poems
which is why I will never stop opening myself up
to conceive them'
For all the years you have been writing Jae you have been inventive in your writing and have no fear of prompts as you have such a wide imagination.
ReplyDeleteThis is incredibly evocative, Jae!❤️ I was especially touched by "It would be good to empty out some thoughts/Make room for others/ But how do you light the dynamite after all these years of silence." I also love the quoted lines you chose! Thank you so much for writing to the prompt.❤️
ReplyDelete"In the morning we will tell stories / They will blow our mind" I love all of the dynamite imagery in this poem and the selected Rupi Kaur lines to accompany. We aren't just dynamite we are fireworks! Bright, sparkling and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, Jae:
ReplyDelete“I feel I can
And when I do
The sky will sparkle like a million golden planets
Falling head first into the sun”
Lighting the dynamite by simply letting go- I love this image!
ReplyDelete:)
ReplyDeleteAll the dynamite images in the poem makes it engaging and full of imagination.
ReplyDeleteOh do! Do! I love the idea of the quiet explosion and filling the night with sparkles! And this: "More like a balloon fit to burst
ReplyDeleteWell past the party and the cheers"
It think we all have times we need to let loose in controlled explosions of our own choosing. Because if not, we may blow up things we never intended to.
ReplyDeleteI love the rabbits with feet quick and dancing.....and those closing lines are amazing!
ReplyDeleteI would say an explosion is faaarrrr overdue. Love this so much.
ReplyDelete"“I feel I can
ReplyDeleteAnd when I do
The sky will sparkle like a million golden planets
Falling head first into the sun”
Let go, Jae. Look at the possibilities.
