Second

The teddy bear is ground
Into the dirt
There is no room for comfort
Not in this world
My fingers bleed
Curled around
The rusted tin and metal
We carry on
Refuse to hear
The bend and snap
Of our spirit
Heavy
Hard
Best neglected
Balled up
In twine and razor wire
Inside
We sigh
Thinking
Back
The trinkets
The shine
All worthless
Then
And
Now
An empty nest
That locked us in
Remember the messages
The stones
I am here
You are there
Any way to get through
To conjure up
Love
I ate my heart
Swallowed it down
With powder and dust
Cleaned the pipes

The breath comes out our throat
In the place where the last people gather
The end of a climb
The light of a snow cap

I hold her tiny hand

The first day passed
The second never ends.

  2. We leave behind the past every day. How we would love to return but the future is good too it is only the present that seems endless. It is time to leap to that third day because anything is possible.

  3. This breaks my heart with the powerful images you create - a teddy bear ground into the dirt, the curled bloody fingers,
    "The bend and snap
Of our spirit" -I could almost hear a physical snap.Hoping the second day could end soon to bring relief.

    1. maybe it's like a frozen twig..you need to snap it..warm it up to reach it..replant it..or maybe it just sounded right..thank you Robyn

  4. It is incredible how with the starkness of one word lines - the heaviness of human spirit and dragging hopelessness and yearning for love is conveyed! "The first day passed. The second never ends." seems to indicate that there is no future - but one can hope. One can hope.

  7. I am told the Past holds sadness, the Future anxiety, so it is best right here. Right now, everything is OK. My love to you, xoxoxoxohugs

  8. Some days do seem longer...and then with the blink of our eyes and a few dreams...
This reminds me of every time as a child, I had to move somewhere else.

I went a few shades dark with my tanka here:

  9. It's easy to get stuck, held back by the past. But where there is a second day, a third must follow. True freedom lies in choosing that next day.

  12. This is so powerful! The line ' I hold her tiny hand' suggests to me the speaker is holding the hand of herself as a young child.....offering a hopeful second day. So many wonderful images you wove into your words!

  13. Some incredible visuals here Jae...I've had both kinds of days and know the value in remembering to breathe. BTW, your comment spurred me to explain where the feather poem came from. Hope you come and read it...

  15. You are so right. The trinkets and shine are worthless. It's the people willing to love us flaws and all that make facing each new day worth the effort. This is great work, as always.

Gives a feeling of achievement of attaining something. Most who went through the process were breathless at the end of it but they were successful too! Wonderful Neruda style Jae!

  17. "we refuse to hear the bend and snap of our spirit" ...I remember thinking once, that if we were as hard on our friends as we are on ourselves, we wouldn't have any. You are this lighthouse beacon - shining so brightly and yet you hold your own tiny hand and keep your eyes shut as if the light isn't there. Sometimes we shiver in self-imposed dark when there are others basking in the glow. That is often how I feel reading your words. Love to you Jae.

  22. As usual, dear friend, you create images that are deep and profound and touching. I like the circuitous nature of time you seem to impart. I also like that one can look back and see those challenging times, never to return to such circumstance.
