Shoes

The thread of the heel is worn down
We are all out of new shoes
Brown souls heaving on the pavement
Just enough coverage to make walking easy
We walk in circles
Try and make a line
It's difficult
Not pretty
Our hair windswept and outrageous
The thread of the heel is worn down
We are all out of new shoes
Starlight and sparkles in the toes
We walk on
And on.

  1. I share the windswept, outrageous hair! Love the "brown souls" on the pavement. I am all out of new shoes, too. My current pair is ten years old, ready to retire.

  2. This took me back many years as a child when even the old shoes I had were past mending (at home) so the expense of new ones was necessary then dreamlike your words changed, the wind blows, shoes are gone, bare foot you walk dreamlike in the starlit night on and on. I love how your writing so personal to you also digs into the readers mind and memory.

  3. My mind took me to different places with this poem. I thought about the world's condition and how we seem to be out of new ideas, how sometimes I feel like an old shoe myself -- tired. Well, regardless of the paths my mind takes, I enjoyed reading this.

  4. "Starlight and sparkles in the toes" despite the heaving and despite the circles, these shoes are worn enough to show what's underneath. This is more than hope.

  5. As a youngster I seldom got new shoes, one pair I polished so much that the toes looked like those on a clown's shoes. Strangely you poem brought back that memory. Sometimes it is difficult to walk that straight line,,,
