We eat popcorn under watermelon skies
Running between noon and night we are never quite full
Outside the distant chatter of children keeps us awake
We long for someone to knock on our door
Carry us away
Nature tries
Green trails crawling up our limbs and into our heart
The world is all around us
We feel every second but deaden the pain
The vanilla slithers down our gullet
Melts into a sugar mass we can never digest
We eat popcorn under watermelon skies
Running between noon and night we are never quite full.
If we feel every second, we will certainly need something to deaden the pain! I like the images of the children's sounds and the green trailing climbing. Perhaps the sound of knocking is drowned out by all this?
ReplyDeleteI think it maybe - thank you Susan
DeleteSo much loneliness and despair in this poem..only the green burst from nature adding colour and hope.
ReplyDeleteThank you thotpurge
DeleteOh, wow. This is fantastic:
ReplyDelete"The vanilla slithers down our gullet

... Especially when thinking of midnight mass.
Thank you
Delete"Green trails crawling up our limbs and into our heart" Lovely!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Sumana
DeleteSometimes we must seek the open doors rather than waiting for the knock.
ReplyDeleteWise advice - thank you Indybev
DeleteThose green trails: might they not be the way to a sort of paradise where only those with fortitude and resolve dare to go?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great thought.. I hope so thanks Magical
DeleteYes, i like Bev's idea, of the open door....leading you out to where that healing green can wrap tendrils round your heart....then you can stop into a tuck shop and take home a treat for tea. Small pleasures......
ReplyDeleteNow that sounds like a good idea - thanks Sherry xo
DeleteSomething about "popcorn and watermelon sky...nothing else needed! Love it! Beautifully done, little one!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Annell xo
DeleteGreen trails crawling up our limbs and into our heart Stunning
ReplyDeleteNature surely tries and I hope succeeds.
I hope she does too thank you Marja
DeleteThose first and last lines really speak volumes Jae Rose. Just beautiful!! May we open the doors ourselves and feed the hunger that deserves to be filled.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Carrie
DeleteOnce again you intrigue us with your ambiguous writing Jae. Readers try to picture the scene to put themselves in your dream like words seeking answers but they are for you alone. Captivating writing at its best.
ReplyDeleteVery much appreciated Old Egg thank you
DeleteI took this two ways: A child who is distracted from nature's richness. A child fed by nature.
ReplyDeleteI think it is both - thanks Martin
DeleteThe vanilla slithers down our gullet

Nature tries but we are just stubborn. It will help much if we can give way just a little1
Hank
Thanks Hank

ReplyDeleteThanks Toni
DeleteIf only it were possible to feel the joy without the pain!
ReplyDeleteThat would be good - thanks Rosemary
DeleteHmmm concrete and understood. your style has many great facets, as you probably know.

Thanks for your gracious comment ZQ
DeleteI remember playing outside all summer as children - and my mom sometimes had us go to bed early and hearing the other children still playing or people laughing outside .... it was so hard as it wasn't even dark yet! And we ate so much junk food... :) This poem brought me back.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the memory Margaret
