We try and punch the labels off
Her voice is on the radio
Do you remember how her eyes rolled as she passed us by
I remember everything little cricket
The water pipe
The padded room
Cold wet hungry
It's as if our head simmered over and burst to the surface
All mixed up like dolly's sweets
Rejection hurts
Belonging is a thought we care not to think of
Blue is my favouirte colour she says
They make
you wear red
Like the
QueenMore like a clown I chuckle
It doesn't matter any more
Who we are
How we are is tucked in an envelope and waiting
Letters we have owned
Thoughts we would have treasured
Perhaps things will be different this time
You know it won't
In a nutshell we are screwed
She says this with a hint of satisfaction
Harder to fight our way out
Pointless to even try
Despite our wishes and the desire to win
We are going nowhere soon
The chains rattle around our throat
We try and punch the labels off.
When we lose control everything is unsatisfactory, we are longer us inside but the label on the outside then people don't see us anymore only as clowns perhaps! Once again you manage to convey desperate situations with such flair Jae.
ReplyDeleteThank you Old Egg
DeleteIt sounds very grim. How to insert hope into the situation? I send you a moat of friendship, protecting you from the intrusive. Perhaps you can watch the sky, bathe in its peace and beauty. The natural world is always there for us, a healing balm. Take care, my friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sherry - for your warmth and friendship too xo
DeleteI was looking for a small ray of hope. Perhaps she did too, as the chains took their place around her neck. (maybe that's the point)
ReplyDeleteMaybe so - thanks Martin
DeleteI could feel a suffocating atmosphere here and everywhere & no way to end it. And really harder to fight a way out. Time has everyone 'screwed' sometimes. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteYes indeed - thanks Sumana
DeleteIn a nutshell we are screwed...going nowhere soon.I empathise with this..Well as Sherry said you could get a buzz off the natural world. There is always
ReplyDeleteDevonshire tea. I thought of you yesterday because I saw a program on Devon...If you have to live in the UK you are in the best spot...now that is a good thing. Hang in there!
Thanks Cressida - and for reminding me that Devon can be heaven!
DeleteDevon at least rhymes with heaven so you are halfway there - hope you manage to punch your way out of the envelope - the glue is not so tough these days
ReplyDeleteThanks telltale - we will try our best ;)
DeleteI remember everything little cricket...
ReplyDeleteI have often longed for a less retentive memory myself. These words really strike a chord.
Thanks so much Kerry
DeleteHow perceptive! And that "hint of satisfaction" clinches it for me. Remembering everything is frightening, but being right is compelling like a raft placed just where we need it. Too good. (Get well ASAP! Best wishes.)
ReplyDeleteThank you Susan and for your wishes
DeleteOh, but we must continue to try to fight our way out.....and to find that place where we feel we belong. The image of the chains rattling around our throat is stark, but that is the way it feels sometime. Get well soon, Jae.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Mary
DeleteHeavy. Tucked in an envelope waiting makes me feel claustrophobic.
ReplyDeleteMe too..thanks Colleen
Delete"In a nutshell we are screwed"
ReplyDeleteIn this one sardonic line, you sum up the human condition. **sigh**
Thank you Magical
DeleteKeep punching!
ReplyDeleteWill do - thanks Rosemary
DeleteRemove those chains! So uncomfortable! I will hope for another outcome. Each day is different, the future is unknown....
ReplyDeleteThank you Annell xo
DeleteThis rendering is rattling, indeed.
ReplyDeleteThanks Colonialist
DeleteI often wonder if punching is too obvious t times. What about surrender as an alternative...and not to them but to the situation...a deep and longed for letting go. I wish you well in the envelope. you n the cricket ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Paul
DeleteSuch abject despair! Escape on the wings of hope.
ReplyDeleteWill try our best to - thanks Indybev
DeleteWhen hope is lost, it is VERY physical - the rattle of chains around the throat: an impactful metaphor.
ReplyDeleteThank you Wendy
DeleteAwesome blog, i always enjoy & read the post you are sharing!

Deleteincredible.

DeleteBelonging is a thought we care not to think of... that has a bleak note to it as do the rattling chains..but the envelope is still an unknown..positive...
ReplyDeleteWe hope so - thanks thotpurge
DeleteLittle cricket.
ReplyDeleteThis recent group of poems you're sharing is so affecting. I have been thinking about them and now this one, too. What we humans put other humans through, it's impossible to understand.
Yes it is - we appreciate your thoughts - thanks Marian
Delete"Who we are
ReplyDeleteHow we are is tucked in an envelope and waiting"
in essence this is what each little speck of life on this planet is , an opened letter, yet to be discovered a poem yet to be read
thanks for including Jae, this microscopic view, Have a good week
much love...
Thanks Gillena and have a good week too
DeleteSome chains seem to just grow stronger and heavier, especially when part of the world tries to tell us they don't exist, while the other part screams that they are there and are our fault... Damn chains.
ReplyDeleteDamn chains indeed thanks Magaly
DeleteOh those chains! I would that I had the power to break them for you and the little cricket.
ReplyDeleteThank you for those wishes Toni
DeleteSuch a relatable poem!
ReplyDeleteIn a nutshell we're all screwed.
;)
Delete"The chains rattle around our throat
ReplyDeleteWe try and punch the labels off."
Oh, this is so true. May we break them before we spill labels.
We hope for that too thanks Susie
