Alice bangs her head
The words simply will not come
We lie still like statues
A torch the only light
Wrapped in blankets against the gulping sky
Our afternoons are spent cultivating habits
Habits we should have long since left behind
It’s all so very dull she moans
The march
The melting candy
Sticky on our fingers
Turning circles across sad orange skies
I pull the hood over my greasy hair
Too tired to wash the knots out
We will wait
Maybe there will be a surprise or two
She chirrups like a little bird on my shoulder
The light melts like a blade through butter
Should we turn left or right or simply lay still
I think we should wait she gurgles
Water dribbles from her lips
It’s an accomplishment just to be
She says this decisively
I bang my head
The words simply will not come.
gulping, sad orange skies and the melting lights...oh the words are there somewhere...
ReplyDeleteThanks thotpurge - the words were tricky today
DeleteAs I may have mentioned before, Lewis Carroll would be proud of imagery you display in your writing especially with Alice on the scene. Words are particularly naughty in slipping off the pen as I write or perhaps that is my age!
ReplyDeleteThanks Old Egg - they were hard to summon up today
Deletewords simply will not come, lovely take, Jae :)
ReplyDeleteThank you ladylee
DeleteNice poem,Jae, an enjoyable read, I must say.
ReplyDeleteThank you Julian

DeleteAh, sometimes one has to wait a while for the words....and often those that come bring 'a surprise or two.' Happy Sunday to you, Jae.
ReplyDeleteYes indeed thanks Mary
DeleteBanging my head when the words won't come: I share this act of frustration with you.
ReplyDeleteSome days they just don't come - thanks Magical
DeleteIn these times - one may need a good deal of head banging.
ReplyDeleteI think so - thanks Pearl
DeleteThey came fluently enough!
ReplyDeleteThanks colonialist!
Delete"We lie still like statues"
ReplyDeleteGroan. Sometimes it seems so with the waiting, and yet there is breath and sound and questions ... words circling like birds.
Thank you Susan
DeleteIt is "an accomplishment just to be!" The rest is up to us. Many wonder thngs in your poem.
ReplyDeleteSometimes when words are hard to find, without our knowledge, they join forces, and wonderful things happen.
ReplyDeleteThank you so Annell xo

Deletei didn't like the self torture, love begins with self and radiates outwards
ReplyDeleteHave a nice Sunday Jae
much love...
Thank you Gillena - And a peaceful Sunday back t you
DeleteI've had those days of greasy knotted hair and failure of words. I like that Alice sits on your shoulder and chirrups - like the bird in Emily Dickinson's poem.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the reference Toni
DeleteThe rascal in me wants to say "wash your hair and the words will come!" ... which is a way of saying "first you learn to love yourself".
ReplyDeleteWell we did get around to washing our hair! It's a start thanks Bev
DeleteThe words seemed to come brilliantly, from my perspective. I adore the gulping sky, the sad orange skies, Alice chirruping like a little bird on your shoulder. Loved it. Happy Sunday. I am safely home, with Sebastian . E you in a bit.
ReplyDeleteLook forward to it - thanks so Sherry xo

ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful it smacks a lot like Beckett would invison
ZQ
"Waiting for Godot (/ˈɡɒdoʊ/ GOD-oh) is a play by Samuel Beckett, in which two characters, Vladimir and Estragon, wait for the arrival of someone named Godot who never arrives."
Thanks for the comparison ZQ- much appreciated
Delete"It’s an accomplishment just to be" --- if you ever need a title for your book... that's it.
ReplyDeleteThank you Bjorn
DeleteIndeed it is an accomplishment just to be....and in those simple moments of being, I find words flow so much easier....as yours do here!

Delete"Alice bangs her head The words simply will not come" - Make one wonder what Alice was experiencing. We had no problem with words.
ReplyDeleteShe gets frustrated drom time to time I think Martin - thank you
DeleteFantastic lines in this. "Wrapped in blankets against the gulping sky" ~ Gulp ~ brilliant!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Wendy
DeletePerhaps, the words need to come at their own pace. Why does this song come to mind "Bang your head, wake the dead" ?
ReplyDeleteIt's an apt song - thank you Truedessa
DeleteSuch a lovely read

Delete"It’s an accomplishment just to be / She says this decisively"...That's why we love our little Alice so much. She is smart and wisdom personified. She knows how to transcend.
ReplyDeleteThank you from both of us Sumana - Alice likes your comment very much ;)
DeleteBut in writing they come so well!
ReplyDeleteThank you Rosemary
