Flight

The hummingbird taps at the window
Her little breast sailing and soaring
In full flight
We are crammed inside these bare walls
Dipping out fingers in the jar of light
Our friendship rests in the groove of ancient windows
Empty signs
Small steps and tattered feet
What was and what will be
There is no mercy in the question
She rolls onto her side
We are bound together no matter the cost
She is the earth to my electric dreams
My spare rib and freedom flown
All is light and falling
The jar forever a gift in the night
She licks her fingers
Feast or famine we rise and fall together

The hummingbird taps at the window
Her little breast sailing and soaring
In full flight.

  1. What a beautifully written contemplative poem Jae. She seems to be not only your mentor but you muse as well as poem you write is so full of unusual imagery for minds. What better lines could be written than these "She is the earth to my electric dreams My spare rib and freedom flown". Wonderful!

  7. I really wish I saw more hummingbirds. I seldom see them here. There really is such a delight in these small birds....such strength within those little breasts. Delightful writing today, Jae.

  13. I always smile when I see a hummingbird, it has been awhile though. It's good to have jars of light for times of darkness.

  16. Hummingbirds are a symbol of joy, and like that quality, do not fare well in captivity. We humans are bound in so many ways, that are seldom apparent. But, when we choose to keep a bit of joy within us, we are free to choose other ways of being. Really like this piece, my friend,

  20. I always consider "bird" anyone with the gift of flight, messengers of "spirit." Perhaps you are being contacted by someone from the "other side?" And it is said, the Universal spirit is always trying to speak to you. Tapping at the window, wants your attention, recognize the gifts that are waiting for you. I love this piece.

  23. So beautifully expressed! I think your writing becomes more and more accomplished. We don't have humming birds here, but you give me a wonderful vision of this one – in such poignant contrast to you who are 'crammed inside'.
