The sun bites our skin
Antithesis or anti-climax
It’s impossible to know
We have spent far too long
Wishing words
In the half light
Cold milk and Lucky Charms
Turning blue like veins
In the half light
Alice giggles
It’s how we find our way
Repetition
Pause
Anything to black out
Misremember
The violation
Chasing powder
Mixing consonants with syllables
Turn the sour sweet
A magical delight
Kept only for ourselves
We are mere babies
Lost in a sticky universe
Too scared to look
To touch or feel
Too old to be special
Too resigned to care
The sun bites our skin
Antithesis or anti-climax
It’s impossible to know
We wish words in the half-light
Close our eyes
Pretend to sleep
The world can wait until tomorrow.
The safety of the womb. I do wonder if it's like the cocoon of blankets and pillows with the blinds drawn. But:
ReplyDelete"It’s how we find our way
Repetition

The violation"
We can't go back into the womb, so we seek that half-light, the prayers. If only "The world can wait until tomorrow." Wow.
A cocoon is the perfect word - thank you Susan

Guess sometimes the birth of an artistic product can be just that, tiring. To pause to rest and return to it at another time seem the best way to do it.
Much love...
Thank you for your insight Gillena
DeleteDearest again you have outdone yourself. A beautiful piece of writing!!
ReplyDeleteThe cold milk and Lucky Charms....in contrast to the violation. The lines about the babies, then "too old to be special/too resigned to care" - so heartrending. You are always special, Jae. Always have been. This is a beautiful poem. You are so talented!
ReplyDeleteThank you Sherry - especially for saying I'm special - never feel that ;)
Deletehugs what was done to you was wrong but you are brave and strong despite this, you are special and you can rise and seek the world n your own terms.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sheilagh I hope so
DeleteWhen I took care of my mother and mother-in-law I discovered that you're never too old to be special. Love the images and word connections in this Jae. As always.
ReplyDeleteThank you as ever Myrna
DeleteSuch a sadness here I cannot fathom. I'm sorry.
ReplyDeleteWe find it hard to fathom too - thanks indybev
DeleteLife for most of us is so mixed up but only you Jae in your struggle write such illuminating poetry to express your feelings so well. I do hope that by creating such images it is a tonic for you...like licking the sticky powder off your hands! (I can remember as a kid you could buy lemonade powder from the corner store for a penny. The shopkeeper would pour it direct in your hands for you lick on the way to school!)
ReplyDeletePopping candy - there's a thought - thank you Old Egg

The violation"-- The words 'Pause'and 'repetition do a good job foreshadowing and setting up the final line. That’s a nice touch.Jae! Beautiful poem!
