Fragile

We hold the umbrella upside down
Catch the petals falling from the sky
She claps and giggles
Like she has never seen anything better
I watch her
Is she inside or out of me
For one uncut minute
I don’t worry which way round reality goes
We are making noise
We are catching petals in the afternoon sun
I whisper to the sky
Do not worry about the dirt
Gathering on the hem of her frayed blue dress
You can wish it away
Let her have
One minute
One second
Of being breathing hoping
Rabbit will come soon enough
Tick tock
Tick tock
All powder dreams
And sticky fingers

I wonder if you know
I imagined every inch of you
From your tiny fingers
To your little nose
You were mine
My delicate dream
In a world where I never belonged

I perch you in the wardrobe
Keep you by the bed

(Just in case)

Perhaps you will leave me
Or I will leave you
But let’s not think of that
Until
Until

Rabbit will come soon enough
Tick tock
Tick tock

Of course I will follow him
The yearning never stops

The sky stops falling
We lay the umbrella on the ground
Gather up the petals
Quick Alice
Swallow them down
She gulps and squeals
Petals taste like rainbows she says
Like god’s plan for us

Once I sailed down a river in an upside down umbrella
Then there was a shop
It really was most peculiar
Curious I say
And we giggle
Dizzy on nectar and pollen

Do you know I imagined every inch of you
My delicate little dream
My artificial flower
Tied in the rain
Fragilely holding onto that wooden post.

  1. This is so beautiful Jae, There is sadness of course but the dreamlike setting is so emotive as the future is like sailing in that umbrella down a river...uncertain. But so it is for everyone. Poets however can see more clearly.

    1. Thank you kindly Old Egg..as long as we keep moving along and don't get caught in the mud and sludge maybe there will be more lightness and brightness...and clarity..hopefully

  4. Jae, this is quite upbeat! Of course we follow the rabbit, but sometimes the hole goes up... that is always the hope. Loved the petals' taste and the umbrella. In fact, just plain loved it! Amy

  5. This is so evocative of those fragile moments of beauty and happiness. We wish we could hold onto them always, but life doesn't work like that. Better to savor the rainbow taste of petals while we can and have faith that other such days will come in their due time.

  11. I am enchanted by the animated motions here, wanting to clap and giggle, myself, at the many images, one being the floating upside down umbrella, sailing down that river. In my mind, it's a radiant red!

  15. Ah, we cannot think about the leaving while we are enjoying. We just have to enjoy the moment...knowing in the back of our mind that eventually everything will leave, but what is the sense of dwelling on that. Smiles!!

  18. Perhaps we imagine all that is dear to us? Is there any other way? For everything in the world is the same really? Yet we say, we know there are some things that is special to us...help us get by. I think it begins in the imagination. I like this one...and I like the trip in the upside down umbrella, I think the only way to travel. Right now, my umbrella is upside down.

  24. i really like this. it's somewhat a line between a dream and reality. there's a tinge of sadness but i can understand, after all we sometimes hope to be a part of a world impossible to be a part of.

  25. I want into that upside down umbrella and to taste rainbows. What a delightful and heady mix you have created here. And yes there is sadness as well. How would we know the one without the other? What we imagine is ours alone to keep or release and our words are trolling anchors meant to keep us from drifting too far from whatever path we have chosen.
