Kick

My face
My face
Reflects
The
Yellow
Not
Time
Not
Nicotine
Small
Powder
Kicks
tick tick ticking
Work around the blood
Clock work
Clock stopped
Time
A lame kind of trick
trick trick tricky
Where exactly is the tea and cake
Demands Alice
She is getting
Restless
Restless
Stamps
Her tiny little feet
Tersely
Her red patent shoes
Scuffed
Messy
Not quite
Ruined
Worn through
Wearing through
We are playing the game
Right
Co-operate
Disconnect
Stop
Being
Shh
But I have a plan
A simple plan
Held safe in my pocket
Held safe
You see
Like Alice
Is
j
That is how
I hold
My
Self
Safe
It has always been
It will always be

My face
My face
Reflects
The
Yellow
Not
Time
Not
Nicotine
Small
Powder
Kicks
tick tick ticking
Work around the blood
Clock work
Clock work

Time
Will strike
When
Hand reaches pocket
Alice and I will sing
Will sing
We are safe
We are safe
We are one
We are all
We are.

  1. I wish I knew what the powder was or referred to... oh how many times i am like the impatient Alice of your poem wondering exactly when my tea and cake will come. I especially like your last stanza-- it reminds me of the hope of heaven i hold in the "pocket" of soul to assure me one day we will all be safe indeed. thank you for your poem

  3. Safety... real safety. I hope so!
Literarily, this is a great piece, J. The repetitions come at just the right time. The long, lean construction givres each word more weight. May be time to consider a book...

  4. Our faces do reflect what is happening to us but not everyone can read faces,,or decipher our poetry,,,or, or,,but we can read the yearning,,,so we wish you and Alice the safety you seek,,a good end in your sights,,,

    1. Thank you Ellecee..very true..faces are not like clock faces..no logic..no real symmetry given that the hands move..ticking yearning still applies..thank you for your wishes..

  5. The human spirit is resilient! Good for you for finding a way to cope with the situation, and play the required games successfully. I remember doing much the same once long ago. XOXO

  7. Wherever you are you can still inhabit that secret world that very few can enter. While you have that, J and Alice are safe, loved and unconquerable.

  11. I too like very much the repetitions in this poem. As Kim said, it is a great piece, Jae. I love the last stanza especially. So well crafted. I will 'sing' along with you here. (And yes, stay safe!)

  13. Jae, you and Alice and her red shoes... there WILL come a time. I promise.

Your use of nicotine and color in this piece, striking. The repetitions with subtle changes, so effective. BRAVA! Amy
