The Scrolls At My Feet

The scrolls fall at my feet
I trace them with the edge of my shoe
The line is too fine so I crouch and touch the patterns with my fingers
I smile as the loops take me back to the start over and over again
so clear so definite so sweet
The sun plays out a path of where I need to be
Where I need to go
I stand up
Lose my footing a little
Dust the stones from my shoe and walk on
Back to the beige place
Back to the place where all lines are lost
Back to the blue bed were nothing switches off
Where circles become triangles which poke you in the back
Squares which kick you into remembering
Nets which steal your dreams and tie up the scrolls so in the morning you don’t remember the pattern you need to follow
But six o’clock comes and the sun shines again
There are new scrolls to be found with your feet
So I knock the dust from my eyes smooth down my face wipe up my hair and go hunting
hunting for the patterns the keys the right path at my feet.

  6. Jae,
When compared to your past work, his piece feels like a transition, has a tone of emergence. Feels like a story of stepping out, trying something new, and then retreating to familiar patterns and spaces with plans to venture out again. Brilliant.

  7. Now we are getting somewhere!
So much freshness, and discovery, and hope - lost betweentimes, but eagerly sought with the new day.
    I love this one Jae.

  10. It's nice to see you in a place that isn't struggling - a peace and sense of hope and discovery. I love all your writing and it is wonderful to see a different facet of you sparkling on the screen :)

  11. 'hunting for the patterns the keys the right path at my feet. '
That is the ultimate quest, isn't it? The search to find the right path.

  12. This makes me think of walking a labyrinth. There's one in front of the Cathedral of St Francis in Santa Fe and I walk it every time I go. The really cool thing about labyrinths is that just when you think you screwed up and you're on the wrong path, you turn a corner and find yourself in the center - right where you want to be.

  14. Ah, the desert of our minds. Sometimes it is beautiful and sometimes it is just a mirage, waiting for us to stumble into it and devour us whole. This is a great little piece and fits in well with what I'm writing for my manuscript. I can feel the inspiration already, too bad I have to go to work soon! Thanks Jae, another one for the annals!

  15. Lovely recovery. There is so much comfort in knowing that the sun will always shine, about six, the next morning.
I felt a sense of transition for you also. :-)

  16. I like the optimism of this one, the desire to pull something out of the muddle. In fact that line: dust the stones from my shoe and walk on might just become a mantra...

  18. To Archna - couldn't post on your site -

You have such a connection with the physical world around you..not being a nature knower I imagine you are describing a well-loved tree or plant..but it has wider meaning of course..how time with things we love is short and fades as quick as winter..beautiful and elemental..Jae

  23. A hopeful piece, Jae. Even though there is regression, I am still hopeful. Feeble though it may be, the sun doth shine. Lift your face and embrace it.

  26. Finding the patterns...I love that. This poem seems a puzzle of words. There are so many layers, and symbols. Very nice.

  28. Jae, one of your more hopeful poems, most welcome to see sun shining for you. Your use of color, even in dust and the "beige place," very effective. It is all about the right path for YOUR feet, which may vary from the path of others... Amy
