Cardboard Letters

I stole the little cardboard letters from the small person school. Hid them in my socks took them home to the room where everything special was hidden in a small box from a new pair of shoes. £3. Two sizes too small. But they shone and made me smile. I am still small. I stand in the kitchen and gag. Hard to stomach this big person world. The truck I need is outside. My door has a wedge underneath. I don’t make enough noise for the people in green trousers to hear me. Seems I always just miss salvation or something close. It is stuck under the bed in the shoe box and eroded like my feet. Keep quiet. Maintain your breath. Cause us no trouble and we will brush you away like cardboard dust. Long forgotten. Much easier for us. And for you. Thank you. I hate you. It is so quiet behind this door. Under this bed. Feet tucked into calculations and ink. The blood from my nose drips onto my toast. There is no one to tell. No one to believe. I wish it would happen quicker. I wish I could be sure. I wish I could stand at the top of the stairs and scream like her. Like the person who shows the erosion inside. She knows. She knows. No one can see you going if you put a wedge in your mouth and then scream. I wish. I wish I wasn’t stupid enough to make a list for the next day. There is a bilious consistency to my omissions. I am keeping the letters under the bed. Hiding the words and the pictures. Keeping small like Alice in the chequered hall. Should I swallow or bite. I scatter the cardboard letters and it keeps my heart alive. My head. I don’t think it left the small person school.

  1. Dear, sweet little cardboard letters from the small person school. You seem to wonder about so many things? And there is the answer, your head is still at the small person school. There you are wondering about in the world of Alice. Almost a funny piece and oh so dear. Thank you Jae.

I see on your sidebar you are now 37, you have had a birthday. Happy Birthday Jae! May this year be your very best! All good things will come your way and maybe a kitty, too.

  5. The small person school was a good place for me, too. It was there I learned of my value, despite what I'd learned elsewhere. It was there that I learned to rebel against that which would destroy me; where I learned it was better to be better and it was safer out than in.

  7. Thank you Kim - I especially like the last line - school can become a kind of home in the absence of anything better - if only it continued Jae

  11. Very moving, as I've been at the school as well... maybe that's why many of us are poets... I really like:

"There is a bilious consistency to my omissions."

  18. Another remarkable post, JAE. I remember my own 'little person's school'. Everything was so unfair to a person who could read and write when he arrived; and was left-handed too, that it turned me into a rebel. I was 20 years ahead of James Dean!

  19. Did they tie your hand to your chair..I remember that at infants school..I was ambidextrous until that point..you clever bean you..still leaps ahead..doesn't always serve you well in a world where average is seen as a compliment..Jae ;)

  20. I like the words your letters arrange. They are your words and not someone else's. I'd never thought of average as a compliment before, even as a negative one. Rather, its what everyone even today seems to want me to set a goal as being. You know, why can't you be like everyone else? Like the other employees? Like other people's daughters? I either think too much, or not enough :-) Thank you, Jae.

  21. Being able to see that average can tip you either way makes you special..although sometimes it would be nice to think 'just enough' so it doesn't drive you bananas..we all need an off switch..Jae

  22. I love how vivid your writing is. Um... but what is the deeper meaning of the green trousers?

  23. Once again: great writing!

  24. I like the blocky format for this one. It seems to gather the chaotic emotions into one powerful force. This sentence: "I wish I wasn't stupid enough to make a list for the next day." Ah, but Jae, this stupidity is precisely where our salvation lies. Great piece!

  25. Thank you Alice..the green trousers are helper trousers.. ;)

    Thank you once again James..

Yes Indeed Nico..that's why the hand keeps writing perhaps even when the head and heart are absent..

    Jae

  26. Ah, but the head and heart are driving the hand, finding the way one day, one moment at a time. Everything stored beneath the bed. And salvation is always in the shadows along with everything else.

I agree about bdays. And love what you do. So, much here. Can only hope that you continue,

    Elizabeth
