We swallow our food
Roll back the carpet
Open the trapdoor
Underneath it is cold
Another room
Not a lounge
Or a kitchen
Just a hidden room
One that should be forgotten
All the watches stop beneath the trapdoor
Rabbit would be lost
Squeals Alice
Unaware of the danger
The potential hurt
It would be better if we could disappear into the wardrobe
But that is another story
And we are on our own
In the lost room is an old piano
They keys are yellow
She hammers out a tune
It is neither sad or happy
Just a noise to break the silence
Nothing more than hailstones
Hammering the window
We stay down below for some time
When we feel ready we will go back upstairs
I wonder what awaits us there
A new adventure
Some more time and memories
We climb the stairs
Place the carpet back
And sit in darkness
The light hurts our eyes
It is good to have an oubliette
She whispers
And I hold her hand
We look forward to our next visit there.
I think I'd prefer the wardrobe too. Hope you are having a nice weekend, Jae. E you soon.
ReplyDeleteHow beautifully visual this is Jae and the link of course with the Alice theme.
ReplyDeleteI think that it's the music that saves you from the darkness below that trapdoor.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah; nice work. The oubliette can, indeed, set you free. I wrote about one, quite a while back, for The Daily Prompt: https://wordpress.com/posts/rlavalette.wordpress.com?s=oubliette
ReplyDeleteIt’s fascinating how our environment evokes different emotions. I think the wardrobe next time? It may not be so silent. Love this.
ReplyDeleteYou've introduced me to the oubliette … and I don't think I want to go there! An evocative write.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, is an oubliette a dungeon when it is one's own secret place, for one's own use ... or instead a haven? I like the association of the name with forgetting, and thought of this account as accessing a chamber in the subconscious.
ReplyDeleteSeeing that access is usually in the ceiling of an oubliette it is of course a cell that one can not escape from, but Jae has also included stairs for convenience! My own writing room is a quiet place with desk, computer and bookcase and a higher than normal window...my escape room!
DeleteWe all need such a space of escape...
