Wait

We wait for the powder to come
Always waiting
Looking at our shoes
They are scuffed and tired
We hide under the covers but sleep doesn't come
We drink coffee and crunch bread
As if it will make time a little easier to swallow
Iron the clothes
Dust down the sheets
Morning will greet us with its usual grin
We made it through another night
We have another day to get through
Such is the way
We take small steps into the sacred building
Daren't lay a prayer upon the board
Just look at the candle burning bright
The rich purples and silver blooms
We come home again
Sink into a half sleep
Always waiting
Always waiting
For the powder to come.

  4. There is such a weariness expressed here. It is as if sleep is nothing but a cruel tease, and the day instead is a respite (despite being tired) from dealing with whatever it is that comes at night.

  5. It is nice to feel that even though "the power" seems to be so far away, the hope for it hasn't disappear. When days get toughest, that can be such a strength...

  6. When you say waiting for powder I get this image of a ski-bum waiting for the perfect snow... then the poem get's a completely different meaning. :-)

  7. At least looking at the candles must be a pleasure, with those "rich purples and silver blooms". Anyway, I hope so.

  10. This is really a beautiful poem Jae. There is a wistful longing in the words. However as always you leave the reader to interpret it themselves which allows them to wonder about their own lives.

  11. There is something so poignant about scuffed and tired shoes, Jae, which say a lot about their wearers, and the lines
'Morning will greet us with its usual grin
We made it through another night'
express how I feel most days.
A poem I can identify with.
