Alice and The Candle

I take Alice to the church.
She is my only friend.

Although I only hear her in my head.
And I only speak to her in my dreams.

The red lady pays ten pence for a candle and kneels.
A small price to pay for a big guarantee.

I keep my pennies in my purse.

The man in the hat chases up the aisle saying
I love you so much.

This is why I rarely leave the house.

When they have gone Alice rests her hand on my head.
She lets me cry a pool of tears and we float in it together.
The salt eating into the holes in our skin.
Quelling the fire.
Like kisses.

We drift in the water until the red lady’s candle burns out.
Then all I can feel is the wooden seat.
The cold in my breath.
The cold inside no blanket can warm.

For a moment the clock ticks and I hear voices outside.
I look around me.

Scared.

Alice is so small she can be blown away like a pencil shaving.

I often wonder if she is there at all.

  1. This is so beautiful. At least she has her imaginary friend Alice, small but trustworthy. She must hold on tight to her, it is her only hope.

  2. I kept thinking about March Hares and rabbit holes...you ARE wonderland :) I wish Alice would feel bigger. Then I thought of the praise song "All Who Are Thirsty" - what strange and interesting places you take my head to.

  4. Very good in so many ways. I would have liked to add this writing to the Red Shoe project?

  5. Jae,
You nailed it again. Imagery and insinuation are both subtle and powerful. Cadence is ideal.
    One of my favorites.

BTW~ One of my children had an "imagined friend" names...yes! Alice. Both Alice and Bob, here imagined husband, kept her safe many times. Literally.

  6. Thank you Annell - I think the 'Red Shoe Project' has been sparkling away underneath my writes of late..all those magical tales to discover..

Thank you Kim..Whatever you believe the idea that 'somebody' is looking out for you seems so entrenched in our lives..no matter how old you are..I am glad Alice was a good guardian to your daughter..I can't imagine Alice grown and with a husband 'Bob'..I guess one of the things that blighted the 'real' Alice..

  8. I love Alice - and the whole concept of the imaginary friend. Do not wonder if she is there at all. She is.

  9. You always show the emotion so vividly without telling us what to feel. I'm drawn in.

  15. I thought of Alice in Wonderland too, and bringing those dream images into a church--beautiful. "The salt eating into the holes in our skin" is incredible!

  16. How interesting that the speaker's imagination is so much more realistic than whatever is being dispensed within the church. She is probably wise to keep her pennies in her purse. It seems to me that she needn't spend her pennies in order to get wisdom or comfort. Her mind provides all of that that she needs. Thanks Jae. Twas great as always.
