My Child

I am learning how to wrap my arms around my child
That part of me that was reduced to ashes
(Little did they know that I would rise again)
It is both hard and simple
I cannot do what I never learnt
All I know is that I need comfort -
Warmth, flavour, kindness, strength
The feeling inside that I deserve(d) to be young -
And that I can take back what was stolen
I do not need pictures to know what I was -
They were ripped up anyway
Maybe that's why now I turn to words -
I am giving myself a different education
Undoing the wrongs -
And imagining how things can finally feel right.

  2. I love that strength within to rise from the ashes. It's always correct to root for new learning, stemming from experiences towards that 'feel right' destination. The first line of the poem is my favorite. How amazing it is to be gentle towards self. Beautiful, Jae.

  3. Embracing that inner child is our turning point, Jae. I love that you are "giving yourself a different education" and "undoing the wrongs."

  4. To be able to wrap one's arms around the child in oneself is a wonderful thing. We need to be able to find a way to give to ourselves what we need if others have failed us!

They and you! What work that took "to stay the course" and succeed over and over at "Undoing the wrongs -
And imagining how things can finally feel right."
Bravo! And thank you for this poem that will speak to many on the same journey!

  6. In your mind and words, you can have your childhood as golden as it should have been.
