When we were young
We always carried a song
In our head
It floated us away
From the darkness and the pain
The voices familiar
Like parents
In the absence of parents
Like hope
In the absence of hope
When we heard the singing
We did not feel alone
We joined in
Followed the rhythm
And the beat
Perhaps we smiled
Perhaps we laughed
Safe in our bubble
Of sound and belonging
The words guided us
The sound thrilled us
Made us want to shout
Out loud
Not like the silence
Painted on our lips
We are older now
But we still sing
Follow tunes in our head
As we walk
The repetition stops us falling
The warmth of the noise
Wraps us up
Like a child
In a favourite blanket
We will always have music
As long as we can imagine
We will never forget
The sounds that saved us
Or the ones now
That make life richer.
This is such a beautiful poem Jae. "It floated us away
ReplyDeleteFrom the darkness and the pain
The voices familiar
Like parents
In the absence of parents
Like hope
In the absence of hope
When we heard the singing
We did not feel alone".....Words made of gold.
Music..."like parents in the absence of parents / like hope in the absence of hope." Such powerful lines, Jae. I love "the warmth...wraps us up like a child in a favourite blanket." I love this poem, especially the closing lines.
ReplyDeleteMusic does indeed make us richer. Very much so!
ReplyDeleteYour poem is so wistful, Jae, and these lines resonated with me:
ReplyDelete‘It floated us away
From the darkness and the pain
The voices familiar
Like parents
In the absence of parents
Like hope
In the absence of hope’.
Music buoys us up and keeps us company, as you wrote:
‘When we heard the singing
We did not feel alone
We joined in
Followed the rhythm
And the beat’
and
‘Wraps us up
Like a child
In a favourite blanket’.
". The repetition stops us falling
ReplyDeleteThe warmth of the noise
Wraps us up
Like a child
In a favourite blanket
We will always have music "
That is so beautifully expressed, Jae. Music really was (and may still be) like wrappig oneself up in a blanket.....that will always be there for us.
Hi Jae, this one moves along like a song and touches on so many aspects of what makes music so vital, very nice.

In the absence of hope" I feel the wisdom of your words in the beauty of your images. Here, for sure beauty is truth and truth is beauty. Here's more "Not like the silence / Painted on our lips " and "The warmth of the noise / Wraps us up / Like a child / In a favourite blanket." So true.
