War and Peace

For Poets and Storytellers United

We feel safe here
Wrapped up in our bunker of words
But it is a lie
The bunker is a place of war
Dangerous
Lonely
Finite
It is no Wonderland
It is painfully real
Every second
Minute and
Hour
A test of resolve and
Resilience
Somedays we do not want to survive
We dream of leaving
Perhaps there is some peace in that
But we remember what The Red Queen said
If you don't get it right
In this lifetime
You will have to live it
Again and again
Tell me about it
Says Alice
And we both smile
In the fading light.

  1. Hmm, maybe there are alternatives between the extremes?

  2. Sometimes we get through tough times by telling ourselves it will get better. It always does. I like best the line about being wrapped up in a bunker of words. Thinking of you, Jae.

  3. Dear Jae,
The poem I published today is from May of 2011 about a dear friend who was blown to bits only six months after arriving in Vietnam. My former husband was there in '67-'68 during the Tet Offensive ... spending time in his bunker for hours and hours on end. I have the letters he sent from that terrifying experience ... and I cannot imagine.
"you will have to live it again and again" ... sobering words.

  4. Hmm, I’ve never thought of it that way. Interesting.
