Pick

The cherry picker is in town
Hold on to your mind Alice
Or they'll pick it clean
Mix it up in jelly and serve it to the crows

We make nonsense
No sense
Muffle our speech in sheets
Paper linen gold

They stole our name
Left us in the cold

I would like to cry

Birdman puts his hood up
His rain falls in the dark

I would like to

Alice holds my hand

Sugar sweetens
Candy kills

I bought a plastic bottle
That time we stopped
Held it like a chalice
A goblet full of vital signs

When I came back
I broke away the paper name
Tore it into strips
You sick fuck

They stole our words
Left us in the cold
Defective disconnected disengaged

This nonsense
No sense
Is everything and all

The dusty scrapbook used to fill me up
Now I am empty as a dirty page
A filthy poem wrapped around a stolen soul

The cherry picker is coming
Hold on to your mind Alice
Or they'll pick it clean
Mix it up in jelly and serve it to the crows.

  1. Many years ago door to door salesman allowed you to pay in installments so was called the tallyman. When he came you hid! I got the same feeling from your words with "the cherry picker is coming, hold on to your mind..." You are such an expert in this inventive writing Jae.

  3. Holding on to one's mind can be the hardest thing of all. There ar so many who would rob us of it or bend it to their will.

  4. They wont pick my mind clean - it's too dirty to begin with. Even crows are too fussy for that. 'Twould ruin the jelly too. Who was it who said 'of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.'? I'm never too sure how much of your writing is just writing and how much is autobiographical.

    1. I don't know..but it's a very god quote...there's a good short story by Douglas Adams where he goes to the lost property window at a station...and can't remember what it is he lost..and when he walks away he realises it was his mind...thank you J Cosmo and surreality aside it's mostly autobiographical...

  5. I only have the sense of outrage at this first and second reading - I believe that there are many rich references in "Alice' and green plastic bottles and my mind is not picked clean but thrumming with associations. This begs for more careful and informed reading. A very thought-provocative write :)

  7. Ah yes...purging the demons while retaining one's essence requires wise and skillful assistance, which can be hard to come by.

  8. Would it be fair to say that a jellied mind is better than no mind at all?

  9. Thank you again for sharing your ability and skill with words. I've been sitting here for over a half hour just letting my mind wonder through the maze you have created. We resonate with what is familiar to our own experience and personal truth. I'm resonating with bits of story, other poets, my granddaughters, and memory. Hope you know that you were in my thoughts when I wrote my own response to these words. We really need to chat and I for one, hope that happens soon. Hugs from Wisconsin, my friend.
