Over

I fill the red kettle
Listen to my dreams
Boil
The water level drop
Split
Listen
As the spiders crawl
Follow us
Down the side road
Dark
Like real
Something we must attend
To
The chain has been kicked
Already
It echoes
Bounces off the beige
Walls
Body
Brain
Intact
We shuttle around
Breathing
Clear vanilla sky
Powder clouds
Grind them up
Make a paste
Fly
Clear
For a moment
Thud
We fall pulverised
At the end of a dream

The memory is bigger than the house
A curiosity
And a dread

The floor bends as the door shuts

I forget to ask what it means

She holds my head and whispers
It is over.

  1. Perhaps with the end comes a new beginning? A chance to refill the kettle with new dreams?

  2. Night dreams can leave us like you described in your poem...rattled. I like: I forget to ask what it means. I forget, too.

  3. Some old houses don't get to share their stories...because the people who lived there moved. - New beginnings. One door closes another opens. Not always at the times we choose.

I hadn't thought of the last stanza as a haiku...but it could be. Thanks.
Best to you this season and in the New Year. ~Jules

  5. It is always a good thing when the kettle is boiling with dreams, I think. Not pleasant to feel pulverized at the end of a dream though...hopefully, one of these days the good will prevail!

    Happy Holidays to you, Jae.

  6. Beige walls struck home. I hope it isn't over but I sometimes wonder if it will ever start, too.

  7. That is one of the best first lines I've read in a long time! And, I've been away from poetry way too long. I forgot how much I enjoy your writing! I think I'll go through and read one a day of all the ones I've missed in the last few months.

  8. Breathe in that vanilla sky and do what you want. There is the red bed, the view from the window and that glorious feeling of freedom and now to wrap that present up for Christmas, the new you. Perhaps we could all sing John Lennon's "Imagine"?

  10. Perhaps it is only the nightmare that is over and now real life can begin.

Love the red kettle, btw. I have one that I keep at my office. It boils dreams as well as water for tea.

  13. real life is much more unsettling than dreams, at least you wake up from a dream. It is frightening when it is all in our hands but there is possibility too. Wishing you a hot cup of tea, a warm bed, and a good book and Christmas peace, Jae. May the new year bring enough challenges to keep life from being boring but not so many that you feel overwhelmed and may Alice dance in wonderland :)

  15. All hail the red kettle! Just as I thought Old Egg’s last kiss piece a perfect bittersweet ode to the end of SS, I think this one of yours a perfect—and perfectly pertinent—send-off in a contrasting way: sad is the withering end of SS/happy is the end of dread and the beginning of red!
