Hatter waves his rainbow umbrella
Are we going on an adventure squeals Alice
I hope so little bean
I hope so
The Red Queen waves us on through the window
My lips are parched
My sense of taste is fried
I stare at my reflection
Despise this new shape of me
She says only I can stop
I am grateful for her words
They sit like apple stew in my stomach
Let's lay the table
Hope for tea
Certain one day they will come
My head swirls
There is a lull in the air
Hatter wears ammunition around his waste
He marches doesn't walk
We try and keep up
Alice scuffs her shoes on the cobble
I wipe the sweat from my head
Play chicken
Same times and places
Stuck in the hole
I'm not sure it's magical any more
Still the rainbow umbrella makes me smile
We lay on the floor and look up at its wonder.
It all sounds a bit fraught. Thank goodness for the rainbow umbrella.
ReplyDeleteIt is good to see the old family back on your blog Jae. I was hoping you would go back again but always being war of the Red queen! Your writing is so visual when writing about Alice.
ReplyDeleteThere was a wonderful flow to this. It was a fun read.
ReplyDeleteI love "I hope so, little bean", but am wary of the ammunition around Hatter's waist. Love the colourful umbrella, and the looking up at its wonder. Lovely too see you, kiddo.
ReplyDeleteOh how vividly all the characters come to life!
ReplyDeleteI like that you begin and end with the rainbow umbrella and all the wonder that can be seen!
ReplyDeleteThe joy and wonder are what matter here, Jae and so well realised... So nice to read..
ReplyDeleteThe rainbow umbrella seems to be a hopeful sign, for it brings a smile, despite all the other unsettling things that are going on.
ReplyDeleteThis slips between reminding me of when every outing was an adventure and when it became harder to maintain that enthusiasm.
ReplyDelete"Hatter wears ammunition around his waste". My brain turned "waste" to "waist" and that is a terrible sight. But if the ammunition is, in fact, around his waste, then... wow! that would spawn all kinds of stories.
ReplyDeleteThis is so poignant!
ReplyDeleteHey! Long time no see! I'm glad Alice is back, too, as confidante and companion on the road--in this case, at least having the rainbow umbrella to look at.
ReplyDeleteWonderfully written … I felt: in and out of fantasy … hanging on to every line!
ReplyDeleteGreat poem. So Hatter has finally lost his marbles impersonating Che Guevara..This made me laugh.
ReplyDeleteI love the child-like wonder, the sense of tumbling into another world, and I need a rainbow umbrella! Fun to read and ponder-
