Running

We are in constant movement
Never allowed to rest
We drink the sweet tea
Look at the crumpled sheets
It's all too much to untangle
There is a pile of rubbish in the hallway
We cannot bear to throw it out
It is us
The thing we cannot name
Running on empty
Sound jangling
Black bags full
We wish to wear our shoes again
But for now we shuffle around in our socks
Lost and empty
Always on the search for the next fix
And the next
We look at the crumpled bed
All too much to fix.

  1. Hang on this sounds so much like me! I was going to do some Spring cleaning (last year) but still haven't got round to it. My bed still unmade too! Had a good laugh with this one Jae.

  2. Marvelous work. I believe I know these folks. I think I used to be one of them.

  3. These people have ceased living...they simply exist - until the next fix. Well penned!

  4. love this line "There is a pile of rubbish in the hallway
We cannot bear to throw it out
    It is us"
it's so filled with pathos to me.

  5. Sometimes it does feel that way. I wrote this morning..."my day will unfold uphill." I like to wear socks for house slippers...but maybe it would be a good idea to throw the trash out!! oxoxoxohugs

  7. You've described that feeling of despair so well, Jae, especially in the lines:
    'Look at the crumpled sheets
It's all too much to untangle'
    and
    'Running on empty
    Sound jangling
    Black bags full'.

  8. I hear that feeling of "all too much to fix". But maybe one small step at a time? One project, one hour? I do know the feeling of running on empty. At those times, I hobble. Smiles.

--- jangle jangle! I like it how so effortlessly just crunch in a line, an image, that technically one would normally say "what business do you have here" - and make it reply "what business do I have not being here?

It's absolutely wonderful and so authentic - not many can pull this off as you do.

I mean seriously? Totally amazing how you pull these ideas up and then say - yes, this is just how it is - and it is -
a horizontal slice of pie that you don't flip flop onto a plate - but rather, present it as sideways.

Yup, that's what really just pulls this altogether.

It is most unfortunate to be left by the wayside after all the well-deserved rest and recreation. Great write Jae!

  11. All too much to fix is a familiar feeling for a lot of us. I mean how does a spider know it has to keep on spinning its web ,no matter how many times it is knocked down. You just do.
