Roots

Ring the bell and shake the stars mummy's coming home

I have been walking into lots of walls
We are the wall silly
See, we have a concrete soul

Do you get tired Alice
I ask
As she skips like a breeze beside me

Never
There is no point in getting in tired
Not once you learn there is no bottom to the hole
She claps and sings

Ring the stars and shake the bells mummy's coming home

I have been walking into lots of walls

The sun cuts through the blue sleeves
Makes the hairs they made itch
Something monstrous I can’t scratch out

Are you there Alice
Always
Silly
You made me and kept me
I am in you and of you
I am all of you and nothing

It’s just sometimes
You know
I think that it is just me

Everybody carries a ghost on their shoulder
Yours is not holy
She laughs and claps her hands

Our roots grew strong on rocky soil
Yes, we are big as sunflowers
And brighter than the moon

I hold her hand and try to smile.

  1. LOVE!
"Ring the stars and shake the bells mummy's coming home"
Holding the hand of the one who experiences truth and lives to speak of it is a very good idea indeed. Roots are there for the having.

  4. Lots of good stuff here, but I especially like the walls. Yes, we run into them often, but just as often we are the wall. It's a universal problem.

    1. Thank you Ann...I guess we are athletes even if we can't sprint to the fridge...walls are indeed universal...getting past them...building them..knocking then down!

  6. So true, I think, that roots grow strong in rocky soil. It is in the rocky soil that roots have to struggle the most & fight to survive. The fight indeed makes them stronger.

  7. Jae Rose, your poetry always moves me, none so much as this one. I adore "Everyone carries a ghost on their shoulder (this is true) and "Our roots grew strong on rocky soil Yes, we are big as sunflowers And brighter than the moon" Spectacular. Glorious.

  8. I have been writing and drawing in the surreal as of late. I can see this as a painting with so much going on and something important that needs to be said - Alice alone holds the key.

  10. How wise Alice has become. But don't bother with the smile.

    1. Thank you (other) Alice...don't worry we keep the smile for when we are alone and calm...so it's a real one

  11. So many wise words in this beautiful poem Jae. It is a test of our tenacity to laugh at walls and other barriers. For all of Alice's skipping while we are feeling down we certainly need like her to see round corners and other obstacles.

  13. I love this. If you and "Alice" can be this close, see each other, and listen, well you are so, so fortunate. Wonderful writing.

  14. Well written and I agree with bluepapercranes. It is confusing but it still feels complete like there doesn't need to be more.

  15. Walking into walls is something I can relate to. Laughter is a good way to crumble them...instant demolition. The sun cuts through blue sleeves (nice line )and all manner of and the truth is revealed. I am just wondering what the odds are for a big moony sunflower growing in the middle of a field of venus fly traps:)
