Black

Black
Mass collection
I see you
I see you
But don’t look up
I find ways
Paths to get where
Without passing you
By
There are no hands
No warm cherry pie
This town is dying busy
I get high
To see without being seen
There is a new wall
Red brick
Black lines
There is no getting out
They send cars and wheels and bright yellow jackets
I hunker down watch on the bench with the chocolate spread
The thin side of j reaches for sugar
I wipe it off with the back of my hand
Black hand
Weeping hand
Salty and sweet
I pick the words out of the bag
One wakes up
One does not
One wakes up
In that place
That place where
I make a noise I don’t know
I do not like
The water on my feet
That is not the noise
The spiders are inside of us
You chased the moon
My lips are sticky with their thread
Thread running through me
In me
Don’t tug the ends
I might drop off
Drop off
Dust the boxes
Polish the frowns
She used a brillo pad
I poison the water
Don’t worry
I say to her
Black
Mass collection
I see you
I see you
It all brushes off.

  1. This one hurts so much. A vivid description of losing control, unraveling yet knotting up at the same time. It was like escaping into a maze and clouding over reality. I felt quite weak with the power of your words.

  2. I like that you can "see" without being seen. But I'm not so happy about the "sticky on your lips." Spiders can be scary and to think they are inside...tricky devils. But whatever is scary, it is good that it all "brushes off."

  5. Not sure how I feel about spiders inside. Black gives me a sense of foreboding. "I see you" is a good thing. We all like to be seen even if we pretend we want to hide. Another thoughtful write, Jae.

  6. The thread runs through everything, for good or ill. No one drops off, but we do choose how tightly the thread holds us in place.

  7. "I see you," is a wonderful way of expressing understanding. The spider references gave me chills, as other than Daddy Long Legs, the scare me. You are back to darker places (again, I can always tell by your colors), yet this did not make me fear for you, so good!! Love, Amy

  10. This one moves fast and deep and dark, Jae. You write with raw emotion, evoking visceral responses from your readers. You are powerful, conveying scenes and messages that nearly bowl me over. Intense. Vivid. Smart.

  13. I arrive here late but am never disappointed. You string words together with such intensity sad, painful, trapped feelings at times, and yet, you continue on, so I think you have found the secret is in the stringing of words.
