Cozy

We wrap ourselves up
Cozy and tight
The weight of the blankets
Calms and soothes us
Protects us against the world
We do not sleep
Just lie very still
Hoping the day will pass
Sometimes it is enough
To live in our head
Other times
We wish we had someone
To hold us
Keep us safe
That would be new
She mutters
No one ever did
No one ever will
Our bodies were touched
But not with love
It is no wonder we do not trust
Open our hearts for all to see
Life has been a shard
Of glass
We are glad we have
Found away to defeat it
Wrapped up here
Cozy and tight.

  1. 'Life has been a shard
    Of glass'
    – Oh, that's a painful statement! Reading it, I feel pierced.

If there is no loving person to hold one, blankets can indeed provide a comforting substitute.

  2. I am glad there is comfort and safety, Jae. I know what it is to have been so hurt by humans, one feels safer alone. Thankfully you have Alice.

  3. It's a hard world sometimes, and I am grateful for any ally, in whatever form they take, that makes living sweeter.

  4. Coziness with another human is wonderful but it's better to be cozy alone than to try to be cozy with the wrong person.

  5. This poem speaks so much of the human condition...love the shard of glass at the end.
