Fairground

Can we go to the fairground
She asks
Of course little Cricket
She claps her hands in glee
We can eat candy floss
Fly down the helter-skelter
And you can drive us in a dodgem car
It will be fun
She goes to grab her coat
Best wait until night time comes
I say
Then we can see the lights
She looks disappointed
As if she is missing something
The big wheel will be alight
You can see it shine
From miles away
We sit and wait
I remember the smells
From when I was small
Like her
The hot dogs and burning sugar
It made things feel exciting
Just for a moment
Like the world could be more
Than darkness and worries
I stand up
The light is dimpsy
Are you ready
She jumps up
Of course
We are going to the fairground
And all will be well.

  1. I remember how magical the fair seemed back then. And how tawdry it feels now. Though the lights at night bring back some of the magic. My favourite was the merry go round. My parents would buy me a string of tickets and I would circle round and round.

  4. I think we all must have such wonderful childhood memories of fairs. But oh my goodness, to be allowed to go at night and see the lights – what a treat that would be!

  5. You've taught me a new word --- dimpsy! I'd never heard it before, but find it's a fine description for dusk. Thank!

  6. A nice road map for visiting the fair. My parents never took us as kids.

  8. We never, ever, went to the fair at night! It was a different world at night, full of teenagers and rowdy behavior! Days were family friendly.
