War Is Over

Perhaps it is sad
That we do not know
The war is over
It is because you are
Always fighting
She whispers
You can stop if you want to
I think
What would I be
If I did not fight
Empty
Lost
Alone
I must always keep you with me
I say
Reaching out for her hand
Maybe war is like solving puzzles
Working out how to win
Finding your way above ground
Or maybe it is like a downpour
Too fast and heavy to control
Perhaps it is both
It has been a long time
Since we have seen
The night sky
The shining stars
And pale moon
The powder keeps us under
Quiet
Silent
Mute
We sit still in the half light
Waiting for sleep
The moment feels like a ceasefire
A tiny break from our invisible war.

  1. War is tiring. I sometimes wonder if after my long life, what i feel is inner peace or exhaustion. Lol. Either way, it's restful. I love best the lines about the night sky.

  2. I guess fighting can become a habit, a reflex. Does one lose discernment as to when it is or isn't necessary? Then it must be good to have someone to point that out.

  3. There are battles on so many fronts it is hard to prioritize.

  4. One of the joys ~ older and older means fewer and fewer squabbles.

  5. Love those last four lines, Jae! Struggles are within us, as well as in the world.
