Lye

Please ask for assistance
Help is available
The nest falls
Splat
Like strawberry jam
Crumbing dreams
And custard creams
All wrapped up in powder red blankets
Great for swinging she says

I lie lye lie
In bed

I could pour the message down my back
I think
Red works quicker
And we are so hungry
Scavenging for something full
Invariably we are empty
Like paper torn from boxes

So where is my present
She sets her lips
Pertinent
Pertinent

Red works quicker
I think
In bed
In my modest state of confusion

I genuinely forget when I was born
Or when she came

He was so golden and pale
Beyond me
Beyond my dreams

So where is my cake asks Alice
Not that she needs food
And birthdays are redundant because she never gets old

She needs me

Absorption
Distraction
Devotion

I lie lye lie
In bed
There is nothing better I suppose.

  1. Bed can be a safe place, but any place of refuge can become a trap. Be wary. And why not indulge Alice with a little cake?

  2. Whew! Lye dissolves. And so how not forget a birthdate? But is it better this way? Only if "it" is the unbearable in life! I like the reds: Strawberries, blankets, the blood-burst back (for ink?), and confusion. Love the phrase "In my modest state of confusion"--as if the state of forgetting the birthday (and ultimately how to walk) is part of being needed. "Add" that: cleverly hidden acrostic ADD. "Help is available" : a lye or not? What an achy poem! Glad you have Alice for company; I invoke her often.

  4. I love the way this poem begins - did you mean crumbing intentionally (given the cake), or crumbling? Either way, it so works. I, too, love the phrase "in my modest state of confusion".Bed is my cocoon as well. I LOVE the moment of going to bed at night with a fat book.

    1. Thank you Sherry - that's a nice way to go to bed for sure...I meant crumble as in all fall down! But now you think an apple crumble may well apply ;)

We often spend dark days refusing to get out of bed, trying to fill up on sweets...but it's relationality that matters, when you can be with someone even when you have to be alone.

  7. Red helps to feel more energetic, so I assume it will work faster...I also like to wear red.
A bed is good place for distraction and rest, hope you get it when you need. Sweets celebrates the moderation, I guess...Careful with lye though... xx

  11. Even though the rhyme scheme wasn't the same, I felt like your poem was similar to a Dr. Seuss book. At least it read that way. I really liked the part where you mentioned the jam going splat. Excellent use of the senses there.

  14. Beds are guilty pleasures, especially when things have to be done. However it is hunger that drives us out eventually. How lucky (or is it unlucky) you are to have Alice as co-conspirator I think one always needs one to take you from the beaten track.

  15. I can't claim to fully understand your writing. Yet, I love it. You have talent. The way you connect your words and thoughts leaves me a little baffled, but at the same time understanding on some level. I love how you write about Alice. I just really enjoy your writing.

  22. Bed is a world...if everyone stayed in bed there would be no wars:)...Alice is becoming uncontrollable...in these types of situations I always recommend a good stint in a convent with the nuns....works wonders...look at me LOL !
