Favour

We take our powder unrefined
Like our soul
Empty and yellowed

Sugary little stones to step on
Prolonged use can make you dependant
She caws
Like the bile in the back of my throat

Shut up
Shut up

You are nothing but a habit forming
Like hearing subliminals at every turn

We are sniffing powder like it's going out of fashion
Milky keeps the medicine down
Our two pm chaser
In front of Father Brown

Chasing rabbit like he's going down
She claps her hands
Living the dream

Empty packets and pie crusts swim on the floor
Let the spiders crawl
I can mix up a potion
Make my own label
Fuck you all

Well, that’s not very amicable
She straightens her lace

Neither is the world
This is not a dream
It is tar black terror
Do you not see
I only sleep when the light is on
And the papers are in my hand

Well, I was only saying
A girl must try her best

The man sucked a bronze key
Waiting for his magic

We have nothing to wait for
No magic
No key
No frivolous turn of favour

We are going down
Our powder unrefined
Chasing a habit a rabbit

I try to trip him up
But it does not work like that

This habit will never end
Fall out of favour or fashion.

  1. Blew my mind again, Jae Rose--refined, unrefined--so sayeth the one who chooses the drugged way to making no noise. Who can afford it. Let me lay aside my coffeed pain-killered mind/body/spirit and see then if I can comply--be a little dependent lady. I had hoped, I had thought that in some countries, at least, this had gone out of fashion. But it's lurking in silent rooms and in subliminal messages, in magazines and sitcoms.

  2. Beautifully written. Any habit can be changed, though, with sufficient motivation. The motivation is the key, though. And unlike keys of brass, it's not something someone else can give or take away. It's more like a small treasure we discover when we least expect it.

  6. You blow my mind, too, Jae Rose. Your writing is astonishing and has great impact on the reader. Wow. I LOVE "We take our powder unrefined like our soul empty and yellowed." You have such talent. May those subliminals grow ever more hopeful and kind, dear one.

  7. the powder piles up like snow, getting deeper and deeper. You could fall down a rabbit hole without even knowing it's under your feet, buried under the habit.

  8. Everyone has their heroine and it isn't easy to forget and forgive. Some people change and some people don't. We can't fall to the vices that surround us, and so we must guide those who do the best we can.

  13. It is not the problem that is the problem it is the cure. Josephine I am sure did not say "let them eat cake" when all they wanted was bread. How graphically you illustrate your work Jae; probably the people that need to see it can't read.

  14. Snorting drugs are still rampant. A social stigma impacting on youngsters which adults perhaps had given up trying to stamp out. Good that this is brought into the open Jae!

  19. it is so hard for someone who has never experienced an addiction to understand and so hard for someone who is addicted to change. I think you captured the judgement, the self loathing, the "constantness" of the battle perfectly.
