Choosing a Design

They have put purple cloths around them.
And the candles do not burn at their feet.
It is another coming.
I miss his face.
The baby in her arms.

There is talk of new places.
Places I should have been many years ago.
Before.
When I still had form.
After.
The one hundredth time.

I try to listen.
Try to nod in the right places.
But it is all so very late.
And there is no important date.
Just time.
Passing like the flame which eats the wax.

Fill it up with stories J.
Go to the supermarket and worship the beans.
Find things. Anything.
A gentle, gentle plastic dove with a light under its arse.
Glowing and winking every time I walk back to this place.
It guards the chairs.
The ones neatly set out in rows.
A picture of a casket sellotaped to each back.
They come in all sorts these days.

I think I would like the flowers now.

Perhaps if you make a basket time will stop falling out of you.

I think of the warehouse.
The one with twenty pound furniture and five pound suitcases.
The familiar dents in the handle which no other hand will fit.

The policeman stands in my hallway and says if you leave the chain on we will never be able to reach you. In my mind I vow never to take it off.

I throw the purple cloth over my head.
Blow out the candle.
Choose a design.

I am not sure these new places will be.

I settle on the floor and listen for the wind in the tree.
The tree in the car park. Where the lady next door screams. And tweaker guy hustles.

I think of a cradle of soft branches.
A warm kiss upon my head.

  1. I particularly like the movement in this piece, Jae, toward a soothing, comfortable conclusion. Some of the inferences elude me, so I must reread and rethink. Kudos to you for provocative writing that peaks this kind of interest.

  2. Oh! You have moved into prosetry, I have been gone so long! It reminds me of Rimbaud, this : )

  3. This is a moving work, as Kim says above...provocative.

  4. I agree with the above. Lots I don't "get" in this poem but there are wonderful imgages especially the ones at the end and this line: "Perhaps if you make a basket time will stop falling out of you."

  5. Beautiful work Jae, particularly like the last two lines...a well earned rest :)

  6. Curiously I found a lot of you in this writing even though I don't know the real you. I am not sure whether this is good or bad as you confuse us so much with your sparkling imagery. It is just that your beautiful writing is so personal that bits of you stick to the words and I had the overwhelming need to share your pain. "Fill it up with stories J" you say and it makes me weep.

  7. 'And there is no important date.

I love the image of time in these lines- that time is a thing which eats wax, and maybe, other things as well.

  8. Sellotaped. That word works just so well, and you rarely ever see it anymore. What a haunting and intriguing poem.

  9. Jae, this is a stirring poem. "Time passing like the flame which eats the wax..." I agree with Abigail, that was my favorite line. Complex, imaginative take on "design."

    Here's mine. Thanks, Jae. Amy

  11. This piece makes me want to say, choosing more than one design is ok. Or simply, waiting til later to choose; settling on the floor and listening to the wind and dreaming of soft branches and kisses sounds ok for now.

Jae, I really enjoyed reading this, more than once, felt necessary.

  14. My head has been 'inside out' this week and I find it difficult to comment sensibly. For this time, suffice to say that your words are beautifully put together, and very provoking.

  15. Becoming and unbecoming. It happens with us or without us.
You write with such emotion and beauty about this very personal and human dilemma.
The comfort of old suitcases, the inexorable flame of time, the ambivalence of leaving.
Perhaps the only difference between change and transformation is the simplest gesture towards tenderness.

  16. A wonderful work of prose but all your work is.
