I think we should move to Santa Fe
I say
To be near our beautiful artist friend
We will place our bed on a mesa
Wrap up in blankets
Against the desert nights
Say farewell to father
And his books and lessons
We will never forget
How he strangled us
When we were seven
So far away
But near
A shadow
And a heart beat
Can we make mud pies
She asks
Only if there is rain
I say
Not really knowing what the desert is like
We did not learn about other countries
In school
I liked physics
Seeing how things worked
The colour of wires
The sparks of electricity
If only we could go back
Learn it all again
But for now
We move froward
On to meet our artist friend.
A destination close to my heart (and very little rain by the way) .. onward I say, time to meet your artist friend!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you picture the desert, your bed on a mesa, gazing at all the stars. I am glad the time those memories recall is far behind you. A small package is on its way to you....watch for it.
ReplyDeletep.s. I have been watching flocks of Canada geese going past overhead today. I love the sound of them honking. They say they do it to encourage each other. When the lead goose gets tired, she falls back and another moves up to take the lead. Maybe they can give a seminar to human government officials. LOL.
ReplyDeleteI lived in New Mexico between the ages of four and ten. The memories of it will always be with me.
ReplyDeleteEven if not many mud pies, there would surely be other delights. It sounds most enticing.
ReplyDeleteI really like the details in this and the interwoven conversation. This is really a wonderful poem about escape and what could be next. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat is it in New Mexico that attracts artists? :)
ReplyDelete“We will never forget
ReplyDeleteHow he strangled us“ ... Wow. How powerful and abrupt.
