A chill air swirls around our ankles
We are sat at the desk
Pencils sharpened
Head teeming with ideas we cannot convey
Scraps and snips of paper line the floor
Inky and thirsty
All just a sweet dream
Signs and symbols
No way out
We are free to drive
But stick close to the windows
The last beam of light trickles through
We long for the dark
The smallest of three cheers
We reach for the eraser
Dab away the words we do not like
Snuggle up against the chill
Await another day,
Well that sounds like Australia now as our winter starts at the end of next week and your Summer starts then...I would complain!
ReplyDeleteThis poem speaks to me today, Jae, especially the lines:
ReplyDelete‘Head teeming with ideas we cannot convey
Scraps and snips of paper line the floor
Inky and thirsty
All just a sweet dream
Signs and symbols
No way out’.
Paints some effective pictures, indeed. I particularly like those end lines from 'We reach ...'
ReplyDeleteSometimes it is easier to stick to the windows than to leave. Sometimes we just need ti snuggle with the chill.
ReplyDeleteEndings (and waitings) are always so much more pleasant when we have someone to do it with...
ReplyDeleteThis draws me backward to writing with friends in high school :)
ReplyDeleteI see you, dabbing away the words you dont like, then snuggling against the chill. I always love reading you, Jae. I am at the farm with the critters this weekend. Big armloads of puppy. Yay!
ReplyDeleteThe process of writing is both adding and removing.
ReplyDeleteSome good poems can come from snuggling up to a chill---if we are strong enough to survive it.
ReplyDeleteA well constructed, well rendered piece … the words of which, I think, can metaphorically apply to many of the 'processes' we put ourselves though (or are put though), in life.
ReplyDeleteAll just a sweet dream
ReplyDeleteSigns and symbols
No way out ... totally reflects my mood this morning.. love the taut lines you always manage to come up with..
There is a lot of chill around at the moment. All the more the need for your well chosen words.
ReplyDelete"we are free to drive
ReplyDeletebut stick close to the windows"
I love these lines. To me, it's like you can't take that first scary step.
