Cold

There is a green light
In the grey building
Toothless Joe
Is on a different bench
Not bench B
He waves like he really wants to see me
It’s a motion I am not used to

I have no place to go but walk quickly

We are all good
We are all good

We are servants of the sanctuary

I go in the grey building
It is cold
The breath falls on the prayer paper
Makes it curl
Paper groaning under the weight of
Hope

There is none
I know

I have no place here
I have no place anywhere

I sit and wait
Sit and wait
All I do
As if some vision will give me purpose
Thought
Warmth

Four hours I sit
In the empty bath
quiet quiet quiet
don’t make a sound
if you make a sound you’ll wake him and when he wakes he won’t stop never stop
no peace
no silence

nothing
just time replayed
different man
different place
same fear

I walk quickly
I have no place to go
Maybe I should go back
To toothless Joe
Take his wave and wrap it round my shoulders

He knows

We are servants of the sanctuary

empty
hollow
cold.

  2. Oh dear sounds very bleak
    approaching dark winter
    does not help

    Think duck egg blue
    silver and yellow
    eat bakewell tarts
    sip from tiny bottles of
    champagne
    watch MadMen on tv
    under a rose patterned duvet
    with the cat
    until spring arrives

That is what I would do
    Smiles and hugs
    and tease comb that
    Big hair of yours:)

  3. I walk quickly
I have no place to go

Some people feel that motion, even meaningless motion, is a good thing. Those going nowhere quickly might argue otherwise. Great work!

  5. To sit in a bath for hours... goodness, talk about as wrinkled as a prune.
Take Joe's wave and wrap it round your shoulders.
As usual Jae, your imagery is stunning.

  9. You are a real Pandora with your writing you open up and spill all the fears of the world for us to see but luckily hope remains. This is really one of your most effective, sad and beautiful pieces that you have published.

  10. That empty/hollow/cold can sometimes make you wave when you wouldn't otherwise.

  13. Such a sad and weary piece. The uncertainty and fear of being alone wrestle with the fear of not being alone. It isn't an easy choice. You've expressed it well.

  14. We are all servants of the sanctuary, as we must all be servants of something. But do we serve a real place of hope and safety, or a false sanctuary? That is the question not answered here.

    1. It is false..of course..when you are running maybe sanctuary is more pause than stop..thank you Ann..

  15. 'Servants of the Sanctuary'.....but remember, the sanctuary is also there to serve you! Accept Joe's wave, wave back and double the joy, and find the warmth.

  18. This one evokes the feeling of the hamster in the wheel... caught in an unchangeable pattern. There is a hint of the keen desire for all to be different, and a clarity of the perception that none of it ever will be. Gripping, filled with vivid imagery... I SO knew the tub was empty, cold; and you make clear the need for warmth, the yearning for real connection.

  19. Yes and yes Kim..thank you..thank you..if only hamster wheels came with an exit ramp..

  20. This silence does not seem benevolent, but entrapping... even though it is a place of sanctuary, perhaps it is not a sanctuary that is willing given.

    1. Yes silence can be a nasty trap..perhaps chosen silence is benevolent..a sanctuary..but when it is not chosen..not so..thank you Abigail..

  21. At times like this are we better off with those who know, or those who don't. When with those who don't know we can have the fantasy that things are different, and with those who know we are recognized but do we want to be recognized, really,,,,so thought provoking as always, thank you.
