The Pain of Wearing Blue

I choose a pale blue coat.
I carry it home nervously.

There has to be one coat that doesn’t end up in a green carrier bag with my shoes.

My fingers sweat around the handles of the plastic bag.

I am uncomfortable with this.
The colour.
The weight.
Cool light cotton.

I wear it.
In the afternoon.
When the sun is out.

I tug at the hems.
Plunge my hands into the tiny pockets.
Wish for it to turn black.

I walk fast through the car park.
To avoid being seen.

I could cry.
I do not like how this coat feels.

I take it off when I get home.
I feel sick.
Stupid.

I hunt in the rubbish bin for the receipt but it is covered in jam and tea.
I cannot take this decision back.

I sit down.
Try to ignore it.
But it stares at me from its hook in the hall.
Like a pin prick.
But not so nice.

I hate this coat.

I fill up black bags.
Make space for this new mistake.

Each piece of clothes falls into the bag like a piece of time lost.
The sound of my decompensation.
Like the nail clippings in the chiropody clinic falling in the tray.
Making me heave and wake up.

I file away this blue coat.
Settle my arms and bloated body into familiar black sleeves.
To hide is to be free.

The blue coat will remain untouched.

It will not fall into a green carrier bag with my shoes.

  3. Hmmm, the fear of a vibrant color to wear but unafraid of the vibrant color to hold. Does it say something? Is there a subtle message somewhere deep in those black, plastic bags? Who knows but I know this is another great, dark write (and not because of the comfort in black)! Thanks for sharing this, my dear Jae!

  4. Will there be a day, when wearing blue brings no pain? I wonder?

  5. That was well done and I like the mental anguish that goes on!!
Enduring the turmoil can really cause so much of distress and pain!! Sad :(

  6. Thank you Leiffy - the universal, black plastic bag..maybe lingers from time spent working in hospitals..the trolley with the squeaking wheels and the black bag no-one is supposed to notice..thank you for visiting..I guess you don't have to be in space to drive yourself out of your tree!

I hope so Kim..maybe it depends on the colour inside..matching the two..learning to lift one with the other..or maybe just being able to look at something pretty..like bluebells..

  8. To hide is to be free, colour can be unsettling to say the least, so much as always in your words Jae, brilliantly told.

  9. It's like being inside her mind...and I think I've actually been there, buying something I learned to hate because it was too conspicuous. You sure know how to convey the feeling.

  10. kind of sad when you have to hide to be free ..
    Lived through this ..

  11. Not so nice as a pinprick! She sees herself as she should be in her blue coat but needs to hide herself, be anonymous again. With all your characters there is the mystery of the cause for their pain. Every action is a cry for help but any help would be rejected with anger. You must help her Jae, you are the only one, you must set her free.

  12. Colors affect our mood. Hide to be free - how many times have I been in a similar situation... I see the anguish. Well-said, Jae Rose.

  13. It is said that wearing black hides all the sins. One must wonder what is exposed through blue. I may never wear colours again.

  14. I love this. I've had struggles with clothing in similar ways. They still hang in my closet while I hide in black.

  15. It's amazing how colors make us seem so different to ourselves.
I particularly love the following lines.
'Each piece of clothes falls into the bag like a piece of time lost.
    The sound of my decompensation.'

  16. Hiding to be free... that's what I've been doing. But how long can you hide?

    Beautifully written Jea!

  17. Jae, I was so with you with this one...i don't know what it is but i always felt too exposed in bright colours and I would physically feel uncomfortable when wearing them, just wanting to hide. Its something that over time I've let go of but it certainly took some re-training of my thinking...congratulations for having the courage to buy a blue coat...you rock :)

  18. It is really a question of self-confidence - lack it, and black is safe, and ubiquitous.
I liked wearing broad overcheck jackets and coats, but in Finland that would be equated with vanity, so I have 'gone sober' in a rustic way. Safer, but still satisfying to a countryman.

  19. Progress through color. There was a time when I wore brown, dull and nothing. I have lots or black but now I have shades of red too.

  21. I just LOVE this! I can't tell you how often I go shopping, finding these 'wonderful' deals and cool clothes, only to come home and say "what was I thinking?!?"

Thanks for helping me feel not quite so stupid.

  23. I once had a blue corduroy coat, but it wasn't me that found it inappropriate and made it disappear. I too, learned that black is better. And have come away from that as well.

Thank you Jae, you seem to ring a great many chimes with your words.

  24. But... that blue coat seems so beautiful! I want her to try it on and look again.

  25. You wrap a coat of freedom around you - a coat the color of water, the source of life. It becomes too much - the fear of being free and being seen, making choices that can lead to unknowns. It's safer to put it in a bag and hide it, safer to stay in the dark. It's scary to move out to wide open sky spaces. It seems there is more said here that is hidden behind the words.

I had to look up decompensation too. "deterioration of a previously working system" - change interrupts everything and is frightening. Sometimes though, it is a good thing. Maybe smaller steps...a blue hankie or even a blue shirt to be worn under a black coat...a secret freedom :)

Sorry it took so long to get by here - a short holiday with family. It is not possible to do much reading or writing when there are 25 people in the house! As always, your writing leaves me staring out the window in thought.

    Thank you Jingle..Happy Tuesday...

Thank you Elizabeth - as do yours..

Thank you Kate..maybe she will..perhaps after the colour has faded a little in the wardrobe..

Thank you Dee - I sometimes think you understand what I write more than I do..the colourful 'undergarments' are a great suggestion..you can look like thunder but wear a rainbow on your feet..and nobody knows..I hope you had a good holiday..sounds like fun..I am sure it brought up some great inspiration for your next posts (which I look forward to reading)..

    Thanks to all

  27. I too hope some day that blue (or any other color) will become a part of her world, and she won't want to hide any longer, How painful that must be, I really want her to put on that coat, so I'm glad she won't throw it out, at least yet.

  29. painfully beautiful. maybe putting the coat on under different light may make things better, or worse. i don't know, i love the sounds of struggle here.

your writing is smooth and clear. i look forward to visiting again.
