Swell

We sing and pull our spirit
It is pay day
A fine alchemy
A little dust
There is a chill that swells inside us
Pepper in the clouds
Sugar in the stars
Our breath takes the sting out of the moon
Mixing and swirling life
We have debts
Regrets
Secrets we will take to the grave
Maybe the end will be a relief
We clasp and release hands
A poor thing on loan
His finger nails are black
They paint a fine picture
We sit and stare
All the world in front of us
All the dreams behind
What will become of us she whispers
I dare not answer
Silence is our blanket
Our protection
We cuddle up and sleep
Thankful for another day.

  4. Oftentimes sleep is the most soothing thing we can do for ourselves when the world seems overwhelming.

  5. I think we all have secrets we'll take to the grave. To cuddle up and sleep sounds enticing, has me thinking fondly of bedtime. And another day is indeed something to be thankful for.

  6. All of life is indeed ahead......sad to think all the dreams are behind....maybe we can think up some new ones, my friend. I, too, feel such gratitude every night as I sink into bed - grateful for rest, another day at its close.....and, another day ahead. Lovely to read you this morning. I send you a bouquet of virtual spring tulips to brighten your Sunday. I hope you enjoyed the children singing. Hope personified.

  7. "Silence is our blanket": I so feel that. Not knowing can be a bewildering situation but there is that chance for another day and it enough to know that sometimes. Such an emotional read for me! Well penned.

  8. Pay day is tomorrow here... and I remember when this meant that you would live a little bit more before the bills were paid.

  9. How expertly you’ve balance in this poem the joy, fine alchemy and sugar of pay with the underlying fear of debts, regrets and secrets, Jae. I feel the sad despair of:
‘All the world in front of us
    All the dreams behind’
and the silence in answer to the whispered “What will become of us?”
